Now that I have a Mastodon account set up on OMG.LOL’s Mastodon Instance I am wondering how to use it? 🤔 Cross post from Micro.blog? Free standing? If the latter, when and what do I post there? What goes in one and what in the other?

@crossingthethreshold I’m crossposting, and interaction happens there, with other Mastodon users. Every once in a very long while I’ll post something straight to Mastodon.

@crossingthethreshold no idea, I’m also confused where to post. I have a blog and now have Micro.blog. I don’t use Twitter any more. But if I would, I would post here and let Micro.blog to repost on Twitter.

@crossingthethreshold I follow the same process as @maique. The only thing that doesn't (or I haven't worked out how to) handle is content warnings

@crossingthethreshold if in doubt pick a mothership (I'd go M.b) and cross-post.
I log in monthly to check for comments there.
You may find some good niche community with omg.lol folks but on Eugen's standard instances it leans general internet culture (cats etc.)

@warner @crossingthethreshold This is the advantage of choosing a smaller instance aligned with your interests. It prevents the fire hose local timeline of the larger ones, but you can still federate with them if want.

@pimoore how easy is it to switch instances? Or at least pipe in other ones? Need more M.b realness when I log onto Mastodon

@warner Here’s a post that discusses the process, and has a link to both documentation and a video. I’ve done it twice and it was utterly painless both times.

@pimoore thanks for sharing, Pete. I've dabbled in the Fediverse a little - a mini-tutorial on it would be quite handy (perhaps one exists?)... it still seems pretty low-key and tech-crowd-focused, and takes some getting used to for this less-developer-y chap over here :)

@crossingthethreshold a bit different, but I am struggling to decide whether to get a second blog or keep using mastodon syndicated here. My main blog is only for photos and I am using mastodon for text. But I am leaning towards getting a second blog here for that.

@pcora My opening of an OMG.LOL account was what spurred me into exploring Mastodon - OMG has an associated instance social.lol. I had not felt too much of a pull towards it before. For now I am cross posting from here, my main blog, to there. I'll just see how that goes, but for now it feels like a fun, zero pressure set up.

The main problem with switching @pimoore is - though existing followers carry over - you have to update your url everywhere to get new ones.

@warner Yeah switching the URLs is a pain, but I’m keeping a list of all the places I have it so it’s easy to catch them all. Social.lol will likely be where I stay ongoing.
