Saturday

Burnt trees.

The drive up was sad. Miles and miles of burnt forest.

Close to the end, a deer crossed the highway just in front of me. I almost cried.

View from Chaves. River, Roman bridge.

A house with a man standing in front of it, covered by a box.

Then it was time to have fun: being with our dear friends, and a concert. Dinner, beer, and back to the hotel.

A musician plays guitar in the garden.

@maique Tragic to see a forest reduced like that but at least it’s ashes are feeding the ground for new growth in the near future. (Beautiful photos, as always.)

@gregmoore Thank you. The fire issue is painful. Homes are lost, lives are lost, acres of forest are lost. Every single year.

@maique @gregmoore And the loss of forests means even more carbon dioxide not being pulled from the atmosphere, further accelerating climate damage in a vicious circle.

@pimoore @maique @gregmoore Yeah, the sight of it would have brought me to tears. My daily thoughts are now dominated by climate change and related news. And I find it hard to have conversations with friends or family because I can think to talk about is this. To do otherwise seems wrong... any moment of happiness is tinged by a pervasive sense of guilt.

@Denny @maique @gregmoore Climate change and wealth inequality are both the biggest things I think about every single day. The fact they are linked to one another is not a coincidence. Like you pointed out, it’s hard not to as much as it is hard to keep it from creeping into conversation.

@maique I didn’t know that the fires occurred where people lived too. Doubly tragic.

@gregmoore Yeah. Five years ago we had a terrible fire, and 66 people died, just on that one fire. Awful thing, many locked in their cars, when the whole road caught fire, and they couldn’t see their way to salvation. The whole country was mourning.
