JFC, it’s like the past few years’ discussions on bias in training data and issues with shortcut learning in AI models just didn’t happen at all?

Like, our industry didn’t take in any of it, did it?

@baldur Is it because that didn't filter down to everyone? I learned a bit about it thanks to writing some articles on AI for work but before I did that I was very ignorant (and I'm still very limited in my knowledge). Now it's out in the wild. Admittedly openAI needs responsible for informing users over those risks which It doesn't seam they are doing well. Happy to be corrected.

@ChrisJWilson It’s the big tech and AI companies that are glossing over these issues because ethics get in the way of making money. See Microsoft’s disbanding of their AI ethics team and Google firing Timnit Gebru. The people who know, and in many case funded the ethics research are the ones downplaying it.

@baldur @chrisjwilson and I think also an extremely gullible/credulous press that is utterly failing to look at any of this critically, instead running pell-Nell down the IT’S THE NEXT BIG THING! path.

@petebrown @baldur very good points (especially about the AI firings). I have seen a decent amount of "AI isn't there yet" coverage but not in more wide-read publications so your point probably stands.
