Matt Bircher: I Don’t Think People Really Want Another Twitter… I think he’s right, people don’t, but I do think people want a simple way to share little bits of information easily. Whilst I think a lot of people are overreacting to Musk buying Twitter, I do hope it causes a renaissance... philbowell.me

@philbowell it’s curious to think what really makes Twitter Twitter. I find the analysis that it’s about access to politicians, celebrities and journalists. Plus it’s so low friction to share a quick post of text or photo unlike something like TikTok (although to be fair it seems like video is as frictionless for younger generations). These factors make it for me to believe that blogs will replace it. I really don’t know what would right now.

@ChrisJWilson I guess I'm stuck in the "golden age" of Twitter when it was mostly the design/tech world, most of the blog authors I followed then moved to Twitter and their blogs died. It's a lot easier to post now than it used to be, but I think you're right in the friction for younger people. One day the world will realise how bad social media has been for society.

@philbowell I remember a while when both blogs and twitter seemed active. I suppose the absence of threads meant that a blog was the only way to share longer content. It certainly seems that short social content has killed most blogging and recently I've posted more threads and on twitter than on my sites. I still hold out some hope for social media, but I do also wonder if the only reason I still have twitter is because I'd like more likes on my sketchnotes (which, really, doesn't matter).
