Reading: Sixteenth Watch
@Cheri Do you read whole books on your phone? I managed a complete book on my phone a few years back. Now for me it is grabbing some pages when my Kindle is not available.
@crossingthethreshold I do! Sometimes I use my Surface Pro in tablet mode. I dislike e-ink displays, so I’m not a Kindle person.
@Cheri how do you like it? It’s an interesting premise, no?
On the purely practical side, I hated the automated glossary, though, because the automated link placement is stupid (look at the entry for « The Two »)
@seishonagon It’s an interesting premise for sure. I haven’t had any issues with a glossary? But I haven’t looked up any of the military terms.
@Cheri Maybe I should experiment? My phone is in my hand more often than my Kindle.
@Cheri oh, sorry, not the content, the automated placement: “The Two” is the intelligence div of a military unit. But kindle auto-places the link on the first occurrence, which happens to be a banal phrase like “the two sides were at a standoff” ... 😂
@Cheri @crossingthethreshold My old Kindle's battery is dying. I replaced it with an Amazon Fire 8" tablet and I have no complaints. In some ways I prefer a backlit screen. My other reader is a Kobo e-ink but it has a lit screen and I like it as well.
It's been years since I tried reading on a phone but I keep it loaded with ereader apps just in case I get stuck somewhere. I bet I could read a novel on a phone, because my first ereader was a Palm PDA which saved my sanity sitting in all those hospital and doctor's waiting rooms years ago.
@bradenslen @cheri My Kindle is slowing down and I have been considering a replacement. Whether another Kindle or other options I don’t know yet? I simply haven’t spent the time researching what I could use.
@crossingthethreshold @bradenslen I’ve thought about picking up a Kindle Fire for ebooks only. An iPad is overpowered for what I need, and a bigger screen would be nice.
@crossingthethreshold I hear Kobo has the nicest E-Ink readers. And the website “The digital reader” has lots of commentary on what’s available.
@Cheri I had an old Fire, and I really disliked the heaviness and poor resolution of it. It might be better now. Now I got an Kindle Paperwhite’18, and like it, although it’s a bit slow.
@Cheri @crossingthethreshold Kobos are my go-to (I have an Aura One and love it), largely because of their integration with public libraries via Overdrive, so you borrow books directly onto your ereader. You can do the same thing on phones and tablets via Libby, too. Legitimately great service.
