Hooo. “New Zealand has been confirmed as the primary location for the $1.5 billion-production of The Lord of the Rings TV series.” Good news for our industry, I guess. Can we handle all the extra tourists? Bad: “an incredible opportunity for NZ to become Middle Earth forever”.

@Miraz over all that! ...especially don't like seeing ngauruhoe constantly referred to as "mt doom" by tourists.

@tones Exactly. Aotearoa has been colonised once already by us actual live European types. It doesn't need to be re-colonised by fictitious whatevers. What we need is for Māoritanga to be respected and honoured, and for our current real-life cultures to be respected.

@jsanchez Nor did I, and I don't actually care. I read LotR many years ago and enjoyed it. That was enough for me. Managed to sit through I think 1 movie. Found it waaaaay too long. I'm concerned at the notion of NZ becoming known as Middle Earth. It isn’t. And there are numerous, particularly cultural, reasons why it shouldn't be.
