Painting a room. Something anyone can do, or get a ‘proper person’ in? I’m clumsy, I’m impatient and despite giving the impression of being utterly manly, I’m generally bad at stuff like this.

@BenSouthwood You can totally do it yourself. It takes time, and the more fiddly corners, and trim, the longer it will be. Take the time to prep in advance, with taping, and you're going to have a better time at it. Painted our dining room, and it was just over 7 hours for two coats, excluding the drying time in the middle. The living room, was two days. 'Getting a proper person' in would have been over $1000 for just those two rooms.

@HerbT It’s a tricky room (sunroom) with loads of windows. There’s water damage from a previous (fixed) leak, but I’d like to save the cash and do it myself. I have a tendency to rush, so I’ll have to get my mindful head on.

@BenSouthwood I got through a lot of podcasts those three days :) Also, continuously up and down a ladder over a full day was a workout in itself.

@HerbT It’s one of those things I really don’t enjoy doing, but will be glad that I did.

@BenSouthwood I’ve painted a combined total of probably 3-4 entire home interiors. Totally doable, No extraneous manliness required 😊 Prep is really important. Cover everything you don’t want painted. It’s worth the effort. Clean thoroughly before painting—very important or you’ll be redoing because the paint won’t stick/will be grainy if the surface is dirty. Tape off windows and other trim with painter’s tape for a clean line otherwise you’ll be touching it all up and it still won’t look as good. Let final coat dry at least 24 hours before you remove the tape. Rollers for large surface area, high quality tapered ~3” brush for trim (and maybe a smaller brush for those hardest bits like corners).

@Annie Thanks. The room definitely needs prepping, there’s years worth of grubby fingerprints and food stains from my youngest. I’ve made a start on edging the walls and plan on buying primer tomorrow. It’s a sunroom built where it gets no sun (don’t ask) so lots of windows.
