The EU/Apple news is motivating me to take a fresh look at the state of things outside the Apple ecosystem.

Any recommendations for the best non-Mac desktop computer for creative+productive use in 2024?

I want something that works out of the box—no time spent installing or configuring the OS to get to a baseline working state. With good hardware integration and user experience as a first-class concern.

Maybe a System76 machine with elementary OS pre-installed?

@adamwiggins Dell XPS 13 Plus developer edition -- with Ubuntu 22.04 preinstalled.

@adamwiggins I was going to say @system76 before you even mentioned it. Has been low hassle for me, although I couldn't speak to apps you want to run or whether you had any particular user interface concerns.

@adamwiggins I'm running Fedora on a Dell XPS 13 and everything's pretty much plug-and-play.

Hearing good things about Slimbook laptops as well.

@adamwiggins the way I look at folding Android devices and wonder what could have been with Maemo/Meego and even shells on top of ASOP…

…wondering what some of these “rebuild the browser to make an app” (like Figma) manifests itself into a canvas of creative platforms regardless of (and empowered by) OS.

🤔
