Procreate announcement is currently live. I think they’re introducing a new (replacement?) app. While I wouldn’t want to pay a subscription, I’d pay a subscription for procreate to keep it running.

@ChrisJWilson Procreate will remain available in the app store. This is just another app they will release and develop further, based on feedback of the community.

@ChrisJWilson Procreate Dreams looks near. Love that they leaned into tablet-oriented (immersive, gestural style) shaping. Will be neat to see how/who is able to produce more than “hobbyist” asserts with it.

@Chadgmoore @renevanbelzen @Avancee It really amazes me that I could spend $9.99 (I think) for a photoshop level app and the company can keep going indefinitely (especially having been inside an iOS app startup!) This does seem like a good way for procreate to get more money from me without me feeling upset about it, I just hope the costs of developing a second app isn't too much and they are able to keep focus on procreate core too. (my crazy idea. They should keep the tablet for hobbyist and the same price, and then make a crazy mac enterprise app that is used to subsidise the tablet app which is their gateway drug. I can see plenty of issues with this idea, but I like the idea of big corporation marketing departments helping to keep the best art app on the iPad available to all).

@ChrisJWilson I don't think Savage Interactice is interested in short-term gains, and rather keep a lean organization and remain as flexible as possible. Their goal seems to be to enable artists rather than companies who employ artists. Animation apps tend to be quite expensive and unintuitive to use. Doing the opposite (affordable, intuitive UI) might lead to disruption in that market. This is worth far more than extracting a few more dollars from users through a subscription model.

Of course, as it stands now with version 1 of Procreate Dreams, it is more a replacement of Adobe After Effects than something like Toon Boom. I think to reach the level of Toon Boom, iPadOS needs to get full desktop OS features, which depends on Apple, who are dragging their feet on advancing iPadOS to the next level. Not that such a thing is easy, far from it.
