My personal egret came really close today

Video alt-text: an egret slowly pacing around in grass by the sea. Geese seen in front of it. Water and long reeds further back. Tall water tank tower seen in distance.

@tkoola In Liberia, they call those Christmas birds—maybe because they don’t get any snow? I was surprised to learn that they are herons, and we get lots of Great Blue herons around here (western New York State).

@ArtGeek oh, that is cool name for this bird. In Finnish these are called ”jalohaikara”, ”jalo” is ”noble” and ”haikara” is a name that covers storks, herons, and egrets.

@tkoola @artgeek I recently found out that "Heron" and "Egret" are from the same origin in French ("aigrette" is a diminutive of "aigron").

So you could conceivably call an egret a "great white heron" and not be too off. 😀

@toddgrotenhuis that is cool. ”Haikara” seems to have travelled a long way from Germanic roots, Swedish equivalent is ”häger” and German ”Reiher”
