@Archimage Interesting. I've always thought Respect (and Trust) are freely given until lost, then you have to earn that Respect (and Trust) back.

@Archimage I never said anything about civility. I was sharing that I was taught growing up that Respect isn't earned, it is given by default, but it can be lost; after it is lost it can be earned back. I added Trust because that, to me, is in the same category as Respect.

@joelhamill Understood. Sorry. But it came off as a non-sequitor. Being taught that “respect should be freely given” teaches kids that abusive parents/adults should be respected and learned from. You don’t want to look up to abuse as a default in your life. But you can be civil to those who abuse you without sinking to their level. #opinion
