@Annie I was in a coffee place semi-recently and they were playing the Vampire Weekend debut. I suddenly realised that both of the people working there were infants when it was released, and they probably considered it hip ‘classic’ music. I immediately turned to dust.

@Annie Haha, I read a Mastodon post a few months ago where someone (a thirty- or forty-something academic I think) had worn an Arctic Monkeys t-shirt to campus, and had one of their students exclaim, “Oh! They were one of my dad’s favourites when he was young!” I can’t believe how time moves on, smh…

@jayeless oof yes when the youth call something I grew up with vintage or retro I just melt into a little puddle.

@Annie I regularly remind myself that all the music I loved in college and tend to still think of as contemporary is now older than the stuff that played on the oldies station when I was a kid.

@petebrown That’s the math I try to avoid. I actually turned on the oldies station in the car the other day and, yep, it was 90s music.
@Annie One of my mentors is a guy in his 70s who ran radio stations nationwide. One day I was particularly upset because Motley Crue was on the oldies station. He said that their stations track 30 years ago as oldies. Makes sense as a mid-90s HS kid, I think of oldies as 60-70s. So I have XM. 😂

@jessekelber @petebrown @Annie I was in the balcony at that show! I traveled a long way to get there, but it was worth it. I’ve tried to see myself in the video but not enough resolution. Layne Staley was mind-meltingly great. I was lucky to see AiC a few times in the Staley days too. I’m old. Sigh.
@Annie let me help you, I need a hole to hide too. Yesterday was the birthday of a coworker and it marked the day when I realized that I work with people half my age.

@clorgie I wouldn’t say that much, but I could definitely be the father of several of my coworkers. And I realized that very few days ago, so I’m still mourning with the realization.
@eumrz I hear you. I had a conversation last weekend and recommended Amy Winehouse’s Back to Black album to a friend who said “she loved hearing about albums from when she was a baby.” Blurgh.
