I have been giving increasing thought to dropping a phone and phone number altogether. Alas, there are still a few critical use cases.

@hjalm I’d love to do this. I rarely make or receive phone calls these days, and sometimes I tire of being reachable in that way. I’m much less distracted by my  ᴡᴀᴛᴄʜ, and would gladly use it as my only mobile device if it gets unshackled from the iPhone. As you mention there are caveats, but I’d entertain every option to make this work.
