A bad day for bread. My Panasonic SD-2501WXC bread maker appears to have given up the ghost today after a 12 year lifespan. Appears to have died in the middle of baking a spelt loaf 😢

Roughly estimate it’s baked close to 1500 loaves of bread plus made 200-300 kilograms of pizza dough 🍕🍞

@jeremycherfas Definitely no complaints! Question is do I get another bread maker or go completely manual? 😊

@thedimpause I am agnostic on the matter. A bread machine is very efficient for a single loaf if you don’t use the oven for something else.

@jeremycherfas Yes, that’s my problem - I have an old (late 1980s), large, inefficient electric oven which I’m very reluctant to use for nearly an hour to bake a single loaf. But a bread maker takes up a lot of kitchen space and is not very flexible as to the sort of loaf I produce.

As an aside, I’ve seen your photos of the bread you bake and if I thought I could reproduce those loaves I’d definitely opt for the manual option 🙂

@thedimpause If I could, I would swap my gas stove and oven for electric oven and induction plates, but that would require a complete refit and I cannot justify that. Your point about counter space is very well taken.

@thedimpause I vote for manual. It’s really not much work and you are much more flexible with the results.

@AlexKucera I’m starting to agree after a couple of attempts in the last week and managing to bake bread whilst using the oven for other things at the same time 🙂

@thedimpause I am a big fan of the no knead method. Just stretch and fold the dough a couple of times in the first 1-2 hours after mixing the ingredients. It’s very low effort for great results.

@AlexKucera Yes, I’ve tried that in the past with some sourdough loaves and got acceptable results. This week I’ve been kneading more conventionally 😀
