Yesterday I needed to record 60 minutes of footage with my Logitech webcam connected to the M4 iPad Pro.

"Great", I thought, "I'll use Camo Studio". (Which is a really nice app.)

But because I chose the Files app as a destination to save the video...I'll let you guess what happened at the end.

I lost the entire recording.

(For context: this never happened with Photos as a destination.)

Speaking of Apple's worst app ever made:

Now Files thinks that a Markdown document is...something I can open with the RetroArch emulator.

Things are going just great over here in the Files app y'all.

@viticci Is this because .md is one of the file extensions for the Mega Drive/Genesis core?

@viticci Worse than Shortcuts on the Mac? It just regularly deletes shortcuts and has "version conflicts” with itself…

@viticci not ideal but could you make a shortcut that does what you want with the given file?

@viticci @stuart I believe that you can change the default by selecting the share button and then the app you would like to use for this file type in the future 👍

@viticci I don't want the ipad to become a mac, or the mac to become an ipad, but i wonder how much just #$%^%ing porting Finder to iPad as a quick fix would help things...

@viticci here we are in 2024, and our newest computers are still guessing what a file is based on a file extension. It’s just not really acceptable, is it?

@john @viticci It’s specially offensive because this was a problem they already solved in the past with file signatures (filetype and creator code). This worked great 30 years ago! macdisk.com/macsigen.php

@viticci earlier this year I had my first SSD fail on me. I had suspected that Files may have done some strange things to it and after reading this, my suspicions only grow stronger.

I bet iPad Pro 20th Gen, with M51 and iPadOS 45 will have some of this problems sorted out.

@viticci You long-press on the file, pick Share and open the file with a different app. It should remember the last app you opened the file with.

@viticci had this problem too. I use markdown on iOS more than the rom files. Don’t find a solution so removed emulator.

@viticci

Does anyone thing they are trying to force more storage to iCloud?

It doesn’t matter in the least even if that was considered by anyone- if you have paid the big bucks for on device storage on a device, you better damn well be able to USE it.

I don’t know why Mac Tech press isn’t talking about this more.

@viticci Yesterday I realized what was one of the worst thing about the Files app, and what makes it feel "icky":

Whereas in the Finder you need to double click to open a document, in the Files app a single tap will open it with a seemingly random app that instantly takes over the screen, which is jarring and frustrating if done accidentally.

This turns the whole app into a minefield where the user is afraid to accidentally tap a file!

@viticci no, that’s working as intended. RetroArch declared MD files as supported because that’s the format of Sega Mega Drive ROMs.
