I sometimes think of switching away from 1Password to Apple’s built-in password management but am I the only nerd who keeps things other than passwords in 1Password? Do people have a place they keep passport information, bank account details and so on?

@pyrmont I've thought long about this one, but won’t switch for a couple of reason: 1. I don't think Apple's system is full featured enough, nor ready for use outside of Safari. 2. I'm not sure I'd like all of my passwords tied to my Apple ID, which is one of my most important accounts.

I’ve waited literally years for Apple to make “passwords” more of a priority, especially since for my job, we manage over 1600+ iPads and Macs for students and faculty. For some reason, Apple still hasn’t even made “passwords” a separate app. Don’t get me started on how they don’t back any of this data up to iCloud for users with Managed Apple ID.

Meanwhile, 1P is security focused, has a good track record and their app works in more than just Safari. I am concerned with the VC funding they’ve taken recently, but so far, their service hasn’t suffered. I don’t keep backup codes in 1Password. I put them in Apple Notes and lock them.

@pyrmont Put me in the bucket of storing all types of sensitive documents in 1Password. I love that it has that feature!

@pyrmont I’ve keep non-password sensitive data in there too. I suppose the Apple alternative would be to create password-protected Notes? But then I have to remember where they are.

@pyrmont I moved away, and am now in the process of moving back. I had been with 1Password since the beginning. I had everything in there. I felt secure with it, and at the same time wondered if with the improvement of Apple’s password system (and my use of Safari as my main browser) if that was the way to go.

But it didn’t work for me. Information in different places. A limit to what can be stored in with the passwords. Don’t get me wrong, I think that Apple’s password system has improved by leaps and bounds, and the secure notes have their place. But 1Password just works better for me. I’m pleased to have moved back.

@crossingthethreshold thanks for the experience report, then I don't need to try it out :-) I also keep more than passwords in 1pw. But I'm not happy with 1pw anymore and not sure what else there is. On the other hand the price to switch feels quite high so I don't see myself switching. But then I'm still on 1pw 7 (no subscription, vaults in Dropbox). // @pyrmont

@pyrmont I've been using keepassXC (Linux) with synching. I use it to store passwords, credit cards, bank accounts, physical lock combos and personal contacts (because apps like WhatsApp love grabbing this info and do what they want with it). It's free, it has some amazing features like ssh keys

@pyrmont Weirdly, I had just this thought myself yesterday. I’m skint and cancelling most subscriptions, I cancelled my 1Password yesterday and will spend the remaining month or so moving everything to Apple. I’m trying to use native Apple apps for everything.

@BenSouthwood @pyrmont I went from 1PW, to iCloud Keychain, and back to 1PW. The only thing I don’t like about 1PW — same as someone else in this thread — is the VC funding. So far it seems to not be affecting end users, but I’m always wary whenever this happens. Almost always it never goes well, even if the effects aren’t seen or felt immediately.

@pyrmont A bit late for the conversation, but 1P for everything. Bank information, cards, ID, notes,… Gave Apple’s offer a new look a couple of days ago, because I saw yet another article asking why wasn’t this an app, but I don’t think I’ll leave 1P anytime soon. Maybe Bitwarden could be an alternative, but…

@jasonekratz That’s what think as well. I do give it a try once a year, but always come to the same conclusion: not yet.

@jasonekratz @maique I stopped by to try it on my way back to 1Password, and agree. Not yet. IMO it needs some finessing.

@jasonekratz That’s a good point, and I now recall a cryptography and security expert singing its praises.

@pimoore I’m cancelling subscriptions left, right and centre. Anything that Apple includes for free, I’m cancelling elsewhere. Fantastical is gone, Carrot Weather too. Hey email will finish up in August and now 1Password. I don’t imagine for a moment the free apps are better, but I can’t justify the bells and whistles anymore. I’ve fallen in love with Notes and Reminders of late.

@BenSouthwood Same here, I’ve cut many already that are either gone now, or soon will be. Fantastical and CARROT are two that I’ve also dropped, and since I have lifetime Timepage and Hello Weather they’re easily replaced. Not a fan of Apple’s Calendar app, but I really only interact with it through Siri. Notes is downright stellar; it’s shocking how good it’s become over the years.

@pimoore The Calendar app is definitely the weakest of the bunch, but I only use it occasionally anyway (appointments and the like). You reminded me previously that I have a lifetime Timepage too, but I’m just curious how I get on with the stock apps. Notes is surprisingly wonderful and their Weather app has improved immeasurably.

@kimonostereo Hey, I'm sorry not to have replied to this sooner. I uninstalled the MB app a few months ago and forgot that would mean that I would not receive notifications of mentions! Thankfully, you were kind enough to mention this thread on your blog :)

Speaking of which, I think you nailed perhaps the biggest issue for me: my sense of discomfort with having everything tied to my Apple ID. While that suggests I should just be comfortable where I am, the problem is that the place where I 'am' is an older version of 1Password. On both the Mac and on iOS, I'm using on older version to avoid needing to pay for a synchronised vault.

And now I just go round and round in the circle in my head... :D

@jean Yeah, and then I'm confusing 'notes' (which I think of as my content) with 'data' (which I don't think of as my content).

@crossingthethreshold Thanks for sharing as this is one of the major concerns I have. I want all sensitive information in one place and it doesn't sound like iCloud Keychain really offers that.

@jtr Thanks for the tip! I haven't heard of KeePassXC but will keep it in mind if/when I jump ship from 1Password.

@BenSouthwood I've avoided needing a subscription by staying on the prior version of 1Password (which synced with iCloud) but presumably that's not going to be something I can keep doing in perpetuity :(

@pimoore The VC funding gives me concern but my largest issue is that I don't like the use of Electron on the Mac. 1Password was an excellent native app and to see that dropped in favour of Electron really hurts.

@jasonekratz Yeah, I think that one is probably at the top of my list of alternatives. As mentioned in one of my other replies, though, one of the biggest sore spots I have with 1Password is the use of Electron on the Mac and I assume that BitWarden works that way, too :(

@jasonekratz On the VC point specifically, I'm dubious there's much of a market here. At least outside of the enterprise and if Agile Bits becomes a company focused on the enterprise, I think it's only a matter of time before the quality goes south. I hope that's not the case but I don't have a good feeling about it.

@pyrmont I’m finding Apple’s built in Password working well at the moment. I have saved other bits in Notes (protected) which isn’t ideal, but I’ll see how I go. 1Password is awesome, I hope you find a way to continue using it.

@pyrmont no problem! I figured you may not be lurking in micro.blog much, but I thought it was interesting how many people responded to your thoughts.

As far as 1Password goes, I just pay for a family plan for myself and my wife as I feel it's worth it for the peace of mind. I'd rather pay a company that I trust rather than go with a company without a track record or long history for securing passwords. Hopefully they don't suffer any breaches, but if they do, I feel safer knowing that the 1Password vaults use 100,000 rounds of PBKDF2 in their key derivation.

I bit the bullet and moved to 1Password 8, but my wife is still on 7 and doesn't seem to mind except when stuff doesn't sync quickly. 1Password 8 has been fine and has gotten better over the time I've used it.

@kimonostereo It's good to hear version 8 has improved over time. That improves my piece of mind that if I just wait long enough before I switch over it'll be perfect :P
