I don't know what to do with social media (the fediverse).

When I started out here almost a decade ago, it was a small and cozy place.

These days I only see posts about American politics and snowflake cancel culture. People are calling other people (people they don't agree with) for fascist, and then block whole instances for them being "fascist". What happened to things like communication, maturity and empathy?

I don't follow a lot of people these days. I mainly lurk on the federated timeline, which—unfortunately—mainly consist of posts in a language that I don't speak. Which is my own fault for joining an instance with a language that I don't speak. :D

Should I move back to Fosstodon? Or perhaps move to my own instance? Or perhaps just quit social media all together?

While I like Fosstodon, I don't like Mastodon. It's quite barebones in terms of features, while still managing to be quite bloated and difficult to run. I don't think that Mastodon is sustainable for the environment or the wallets for anyone hosting an instance (especially not the larger ones).

@hund urgh, I feel you. This is a battle I’ve had with myself for years. Obviously it all came to a head recently and I move away from Fosstodon. You’re right on the hosting piece - Mastodon is a whale to host and can get quite expensive, especially if you have a decent amount of followers.

I ended up settling on Micro.blog as it’s trying to do something different. I also like that you can dip in and out of the Fediverse if it all becomes too noisy. Is it perfect? Nope. Is it better than Mastodon? I think so, yeah.

@kev I can only imagine how much lighter you must be these days. :D

I should perhaps look into it. :)

@hund

My number one recommendation is to disable boosts from accounts that boost depressing stuff. That cuts down on so much noise.

I follow a lot of accounts, and it keeps my home feed gebrallyy sane.
