The single most frustrating thing about flipping from #iOS to #Android is that on iOS I can swipe from the either edge of the screen to go forward or back. On Android, for some stupid reason, swiping either way always goes back.

@kev in what instances does swiping forward help? Isn't it the same to tap again into what took u forward?

The one use case I see is the browser, but as far as I know, only chromium based browsers (like Cromite, very good btw) implement this. I can do it no problem...

But I lie, I use 3 button navigation, I think that maybe system navig6 gestures would disrupt chromium's...

@kev
In what context? I’m on Android. In a browser, for example, swiping right or left takes me back and forward through visited pages. In an email client, back and forward through emails in a folder.

@kev it's like that so you can do the thing with either hand.

@kev hmm - you mean in a browser? I currently use vivaldi, on android13, and swiping works as you'd expect (back and forth).
Doesn't make it less frustrating, but should be a setting somewhere(tm)

I've never used iOS and I still find that puzzling and frustrating. Even after 8 years using Android I've been assuming that I was too daft to figure out how to go forward.
So thanks for pointing out that this is Android and not me.

@tomterl anywhere. In a browser it would obviously go fwd or back a page, but in an app it should do the same. Do if I’m on the Micro.blog app and I’m on my timeline, but go to notifications, swipe left and I go back to my timeline, swipe right, and I go FWD to my notifs again.

@joel maybe I’m weird, but I use back and fwd a lot. One use case is the browser, going back and fwd between pages…although on my Pixel 9a that doesn’t work either - swiping on either side of the screen is always back.

In apps I could be checking the timeline in a social app, then go to notifications. I’d like to swipe from the left to go back to the timeline, but later I might want to go fwd again to notifications, so I’d swipe from the right. This always worked fine in iOS.

@decembr14 even in the browser it doesn’t work for me. Always backward no matter which side I swipe from.

@kev Ah I see, never really looked in the gesture settings before :)

Yeah, kinda braindead IMHO to have both directions as 'back-button', but I assume it's so that 'gesture navigation' is exactly the same as button navigation.

Ah, it’s just dawned on me what the “problem” is. The reply from Scott B on this page may give you a clue. I have always had my phones set to use 3-button navigation, in which case swipe left/right works as you expect. I guess you must be set to Gesture navigation.

@kev
Did a little experiment. Set my phone to Gesture navigation. When I swipe with my finger starting at the very edge of the screen, it invokes Gesture navigation (with the haptic response), and I get the “back” behaviour regardless of right or left. But if I swipe from further away from the edge, I get the “back and forward” behaviour through web pages, emails, etc. Hope that fixes it for you!

@decembr14 that doesn’t work on my device. Ah well, I’ll just have to live with it.
