@jayeless I rely on external typesetting like markdown->LaTeX so I've never actually experienced this until I walked through the keystrokes you laid out. And ... what's happening, why does it behave that way? Shouldn't the opening and closing unmodified keys be the corresponding opening/closing character when modified, too? Ack. I will sign a petition on this, I am that fired up.

@jayeless This is where an app like TextExpander (useful for SO MANY other reasons as well) just shines. Set the desired trigger to the output you want.

@alans It really is bewildering!! In most cases I can rely on Hugo to curlify my quotes and apostrophes for me, so I don't deal with this for everything, but there are enough cases (in YAML frontmatter and also plural possessive apostrophes, which it misses) that it was an annoyance enough.

@Miraz I know you find TextExpander very useful! 😃 In this instance I was able to figure out how to make Karabiner fix my keyboard layout… but if I develop more sophisticated needs I'll be sure to keep it in mind.

@jayeless Happy that you were able to get Karabiner to fix it! It's always really satisfying to find a resolution to things like this.
