I was chatting with a cafe owner about the weather when he unironically said, "We don't need to worry about global warming anymore because AI will figure out how to fix it soon."

It reminded me of the early days of ridesharing when people believed Uber would solve traffic congestion.

I get why people want to believe tech will save us... it’s comforting to think we won’t have to change anything ourselves.

@docpop there's also some psychological priming early on that surely somebody is responsible and working to fix stuff; parents, teachers, the principal, janitors, somebody... But eventually we become the people responsible for fixing stuff, but nobody ever really announces this 'changing of the guard' and sometimes there was no guard to begin with...

@docpop I spent 30 years in tech and I'm trying to imagine saying this unironically.

@docpop The sad thing to me, is that tech and science can save us.. but those have always involved massive change so to think it will just “go away with no consequences” is frustrating (also, needs to be actual science driven tech that is intended to solve the problem.. )
