Just unsubscribed from all 324 podcasts I was trying to keep on top of every day; starting with a clean sheet, again. If you have one or two podcasts you think are must listen, please do let me know. (Looking for endorsements, more than just recommendations.) Thanks!

@vasta the memory palace. Hands down. I listen to WAAAAAY toooo many podcasts, but think that Nate DiMeo's memory palace is by far the most beautiful — it exists in an entirely different space, most of the time — part historical, part poetry — all storytelling.

vasta
vasta

@amit Yeah, it got to be too much. I would try to listen to as much as I can, but when my "unlistened" list ended up at over 5,000+ episodes, I realized it was time to hit reset.

vasta
vasta

@eli Yeah, that was one I'm pretty sure will be re-added after today's purge. It's like nothing else. Will look over the list you linked!

@vasta @eli @amit i even got to having three podcast apps each tracking a specific ‘kind’ ... maybe I should also follow the thinking … that said ... in castro there are already a group of podcasts that I automatically archive without even listening to - so maybe I should just start there.

@vasta I think that the 14 part Seeing White series(Scene on Radio) was stunning storytelling, introspection, and history. My other must listen is the fantastic Eat This Podcast by @jeremycherfas which is about science and culture via the lens of food.

vasta
vasta

@JohnPhilpin Yeah, that's a good way to start. For me, I knew I wouldn't unsubscribe to enough if I just did it one at a time, so I went with a full purge. (I wouldn't know how to manage three apps!)

@c Thank you! Those are both completely new to me: exactly the kind of endorsement I was looking for. Thank you!

@vasta I’ve been meaning to update that list, since my listening habits have had to change a bit, recently. At the very end of the list I link to an article about critical theory's relationship with podcasts. I think about that article pretty much every single day.

@vasta Yeah, there are just no good techniques for speed listening yet. Anyway to recommend I would go with popular ones - The Truth from Radiotopia and Reply All from Gimlet Media. Must listens.

@vasta I struggle with podcast recommendations or endorsements for reasons I explored here. I second @eli’s endorsement of The Memory Palace, though. It’s one of the very best. (I love the soliciting endorsements over recommendations, & the implicit distinction, by the way.)

@vasta not sure I KNEW how to mange them either .... but time to do it !

@vasta ohhh, first off, I had to favorite this right away so I can keep track.

My definition of must listen is really just "what do I always listen to right away?" Right now, that's a list of three: Do By Friday, Roderick on the Line, and Friendshipping. Common theme: smart, funny, knowledgeable people being awesome.

@vasta 324. That's impressive!

@vasta I'm a Radiotopia conservative: Nate di Meo's Memory Palace and Benjamin Walker's Theory of Everything are simply beautiful. In other esoterica: Welcome to Nightvale. I listen to all of 99Percent Invisible but I think Roman may be dispersing himself a bit - it's not consistently as good as before

@vasta what are your interests?

@vasta Reminds me of the time I unsubscribed from over 300 YouTube channels. Had thousands of email notifications in the inbox at one time.

@eli Saved that link to Instapaper to check out next weekend. Thank you!

@vasta not sure if you’re a big sports person, but my only Must Listen podcast is the Bill Simmons podcast. Half sports, half media guests.

As far as story goes, I found The Adventure Zone to be a great listen!

vasta
vasta

@amit Yup, had both The Truth and Reply All on the list pre-purge. Might add them again later, but will try new things before going to my old standbys. Thank you!

vasta
vasta

@schuth Oh, yes! Endorsing podcasts for those that are new to them is an impossible, thankless task. I struggle with the same thing; how do you tell someone that they should allow such intimacy into their world? (Great suggestions, by the way. A fan of all of those.)

vasta
vasta

@kitt Oh, not impressive: silly, in fact. Too many to truly appreciate any of them. Looking forward to a smaller, better curated list now.

vasta
vasta

@sergio_101 Interests are varied and diverse. That's why I'm looking for the one "must listen" from others; help me better understand the community of people around me, what makes others passionate, rather than what I default to, regularly.

vasta
vasta

@seishonagon That's the fifth recommendation for Memory Palace! Really looking forward to diving into it. And yes, to Radiotopia! Ear Hustle, The Heart, and The Allusionist have long been among my favorites. Thank you!

vasta
vasta

@Zachnielsen Listened to the BS Report for years, but stopped listening about three years ago when I started to find Simmons' tone a little too much for me. Will definitely be subscribing to some other Ringer podcasts, though! Thank you!

vasta
vasta

@jw Do By Friday and Roderick on the Line were good standbys for a while, but hoping to try some new things before defaulting back to them. :) Hadn't heard of Friendshipping, but it looks amazing — thank you! Subscribing right now.

vasta
vasta

@unoabraham WOW. I've never subscribed a Youtube channel in my life. I can imagine that would get really overwhelming, really quickly.

@vasta how about this? 99percentinvisible.org

vasta

@sergio_101 Oh, yes. Definitely an old standby. I've been lucky to see Roman Mars record the podcast live a few times, and have a challenge coin in my pocket. :)

@vasta Makes sense. I need to follow the thread (🤞🏽) to see if I find some interesting ones too.

@vasta Sure thing! And I get that. 😀

@vasta I found Colour Code by the Globe and Mail was amazing. Modern Love is usually great and leads to good conversations in my house. The BBC’s The Documentary tends to have terrific deep dives into issues around the world.

pratik

@vasta Try ‘Two Guys on Your Head’. Only 7 minutes long. Other favorites are Flash Forward and The Perfect Country aside from the usual popular ones that others have named.

vasta
vasta

@Christopher Oh, all three of those are new to me! Will check them out, thank you!

vasta

@pratik Ah, seven minutes is perfect. Looking for shorter ones. Thank you!

@vasta I move between podcasts depending on mood. Looks like you’re already familiar with Radiotopia, but I love Love + Radio. Gimlet network worth exploring, as well. My new discoveries that have moved to the top of my list are “Switched on Pop” and “Hurry Slowly.”

jw
jw

@vasta it's SO GOOD. really good for binging, too...I'd recommend starting with Jan 19th episode (or earlier) if you decide to go back and then go chronological, because the story they begin with is referenced for a while and is TRULY UNBELELIEVABLE.

vasta
vasta

@jw I've already started binging it! SO GOOD. Thank you, can't wait to get through every episode.

vasta
vasta

@akurjata Hurry Slowly is definitely a favorite. Switched on Pop looks like it's right up my alley! Thank you!
