@apoorplayer @the Greetings from an almost 71 year old. Although my background includes having taught people to use the Internet, use Macs, make web pages, my blog these days is about random stuff in my daily life, including photos of birds and things going on in Aotearoa.
@apoorplayer Thanks for sharing your thoughts after a year; I really enjoyed reading them. I’m in the 30-50 year old demographic, but definitely not a tech person. I also haven’t found a lot of conversation around some topics I am interested in (for you, baseball; for me, college volleyball), but I find, as you wrote, the upsides of micro.blog far outweigh the small negatives. I’m looking forward to reading more of what you write!
@apoorplayer Thanks for this. I’m 75. Made my living as a techie in my 30s, left that entirely behind. Now I want my tech to work like my toaster: push the button, get the result, don’t make me fiddle. It’s true that MB’s membership tilts toward younger (but not young) techies, and toward Apple fans for some reason; but one’s own MB experience doesn’t have to be that way. I followed a large number of people, paid attention to their conversations, followed more people on the basis of those conversations; then, based on the content, started paring down. My own menu is now mostly traditional-ish Christians, people who lean Luddite, and lovers of nature and craft. Yours will be different! If you cast your net wide enough to start with, I think you’ll find a very wide range of interests and concerns here.
@apoorplayer I just want to say “Thank You” to all the people who took the time to reply and leave a comment here. I was not expecting this by any means, but it is gratifying to know you all are out there!
@JohnBrady John, thanks for the suggestions. I did basically the same thing in the beginning, but perhaps it’s a good thing to continue doing so on a six-month or yearly basis to keep up with new people coming in. It may be time to go back and repeat the process.
@bethanyh Thank you Bethany. I got my Masters in Fine Arts degree at UN-L, so fellow Cornhusker here! Not the football powerhouse they once were, but the women’s volleyball team is outrageously good! Go Big Red!

@apoorplayer I got a Bachelor’s in Fine Arts from UNL! (Theatre with an emphasis in film production - though I never worked in the field after undergrad, and ended up becoming a nurse later in life.) Small world. GBR!

@apoorplayer I’m 48, hoping I can retire some day :-) I appreciate your write up of your one year on Micro.blog. I have experienced less”social” interactions but that was probably somewhere in one of my goals when I first joined. The motivation for me has been to just simply write (something I’m not great at and keep wanting to improve). Also, while I did not attend UNL I commute to Lincoln 3x per week for work and it’s a great town and beautiful campus!
@jagibson Thanks for taking the time to comment. I feel fortunate to have the time to write at my own pace. And you know what? I miss Lincoln. In fact, there are days and weeks when I miss Nebraska. Something about the vastness of the Great Plains leaves me mystified.
@apoorplayer Actually, with the winter wheat starting to grow it’s pretty green on the Palouse prairie now.🌱
