Went to see an open home today. Saw an Earthquake-Prone Building sign before I walked in. Literally turned on my heel and walked away. Being a geologist limits the houses you’d considering living in. Another example: “Beachfront cottage”, yeah, no thanks.

@yorrike oh, yeah, this was a huge issue for me apartment hunting. Berkeley is full of small soft story apartment buildings. I’d just look at the photo and be like, nope! I think I also talked someone out of buying literally on top of the hayward fault 😂

@yorrike Can I ask a geology-type question? Have you ever heard of a thing called a "perpendicular dune system"? Apparently we have one in this part of the world but no-one knows what it is or how to find out more info. See front page of www.horowhenuanz.co.nz (The folks who wrote that can't tell me what it is!)

@Miraz Yeah, no problem. They’re more commonly known as transverse dunes. They form perpendicular to the wind direction. They tend to have a gentler ramp on the prevailing wind direction side, and then a steep drop on the other. Like an ocean wave that’s just about to break, but made of sand.

@Miraz I did a Google search on "perpendicular dune system" and got data that matches what @yorrike already said. The perpendicular refers to perpendicular to the direction of the wind. Barchan dunes can become aligned together along a plane perpendicular to the wind. If the line becomes somewhat straight, dune scientists refer to these forward marching ridges as transverse dunes.

Transverse dunes are perpendicular to the wind direction and occur where there is an abundant source of sand.

Poke around in the results of the Google search and you'll see these details, some with pictures.

@cbdawson Ha! It’s pretty difficult not to buy on or very near a fault in Wellington. But I’m not buying a literally deathrap.
