@heyloura I saw you teach Tai Chi. What are your opinions on fitness level reached with the practice. I'm 50 and I'm considering it as a martial art to take for fitness, not much interested in fighting folks. I'm also considering Judo and Take Kwon Do.

@timapple tai chi is my favorite form of exercise 😆 so I'm biased. With tai chi, like with anything, you get out what you put in. It's wonderful for maintaining balance (which is important as we age) and systematically working all major muscle groups and connective tissues in the body. If you maintain low stances and work towards improving and lowering your stances you'll gain strength and flexibility.

I picked it up from my Kung Fu Sifu who incorporates tai chi forms into his teaching, and I leave just as tired and sweaty from his tai chi classes as with the kung fu classes. For me, it's a safer practice. I'm getting older and don't bounce back from injuries like I used to. I've lost the drive for any sparring. I want to prepare myself for aging gracefully and tai chi is perfect for that (in my opinion).

If you're interested, you'll probably want to find a teacher attached to a martial arts school and try out a couple different ones to find a good fit. They'll be more likely to lean into the martial arts side of tai chi. There are five main styles and they each have their own flair. Plus there are weapon forms and pushing hands practice that are more likely to be incorporated if the tai chi instructor has a martial arts background.
