I’m continuing my summer film classes with Intro to New Zealand Cinema:

  • Sleeping Dogs
  • Once Were Warriors
  • Heavenly Creatures
  • Eagle Vs. Shark

After Agnès Varda in June, and Everything Everywhere (4 times) in July, I’m a bit addicted to going to film class. Plus: air-conditioning!

@jean Long ago my dad and I saw the film The Navigator at the Honolulu Film Festival: "A visionary boy leads five men from the 14th Century into a 20th Century city. Their quest: to save their village before sunrise."

@jean I've heard of but not seen Sleeping Dogs, haven't heard of Eagle vs Shark. Heavenly Creatures is based on a true story and pretty amazing. Once Were Warriors is very powerful and hard going. That one 'made' several acting careers.

@Miraz I looked up all the films and noted that Sleeping Dogs features my movie crush Sam Neill in 1977, so I was sold.

@stevebrady I’m looking forward to seeing it. I think one of the reasons I’ve avoided watching interesting and/or challenging films on streaming is that I live alone and don’t usually have someone watching with me who can discuss it afterwards. These classes are like having 16 friends who are film buffs in your living room, ready to dig in when the lights go up.

@jean Have you seen Hunt for the Wilderpeople (2016)? Quirky NZ movie with your crush in it. I enjoyed it.
