Social Networks won't fade away blog.amitgawande.com

I had some thoughts on how there will always exist a need for social networks of some form that can facilitate communication in many ways. It is important to not let our dislike for the specific platforms like FB, Twitter turn into a complete rejection of the medium itself.

@amit I have lots of jumbled thoughts here, but I really like your reminder that online social networks existed long before Facebook, Twitter, and the like.

It also feels like maybe everyone thought that with Facebook and Twitter hitting mainstream, there was no need for any further exploration or development in the field.

Which segues into the idea that perhaps these ill-behaved behemoth networks are sort of like IE 6, uncomfortable, dominant, and stagnant.

And then we see the cycle of history start moving again…

@amit Also, glad that you made that follow up post, because somehow I did not see your initial post in the Timeline at all (perhaps due to RSS pick up lag?)

@smokey I really like your idea, I hadn’t thought of it from that perspective. However in one aspect, I think with social media platforms are different. The technology aspect is not of primary importance. It’s rather the simplicity, the usability part. Especially to attract users initially and then let the network phenomena take over.

I think the history does repeat itself - the inherent features of a social network more or less stay the same. Specific implementations might differ.

@smokey Yeah, I usually follow-up on the title-only posts. As we recently discussed with Ron, they tend to get lost in the busy timelines. At times, I wonder how can Jean manages to keep up with the stream to pick posts for Discover feed.

@amit Yes, the analogy is imperfect; it just happened to strike me with the stagnation and the “dominant incumbent is good enough” acceptance of the status quo being similar.

@amit I think the secret is that the @macgenie we see is just one of many clones (whether Sestra or Cylon, I am not certain) ;-) But if that’s not the case, then it’s definitely 🦸‍♀️

@smokey Yeah, I understand. "Acceptance of status quo" really captures it well. Wish, there's soon a Firefox out against the IE that is Facebook 👍🏽

@amit I’m thinking we might know a Firefox in this analogy :-)
