@simonwoods @eli Only the web. Because it’s not like URLs aren’t one of the 3 fundamental building blocks of the web (HTTP, HTML, URL), right?
You know what doesn’t need URLs? (Web-ish) silos and places where people don’t create, but only consume. Because, you know, if you want to link to something (even another page on your own website), you need a URL, and I don’t know how you replace that (at least not with something that’s not more complex than URLs).
@eli @simonwoods @smokey One of the Internet's major flaws is it favors monopolies. Once a service reaches a critical mass, it becomes incredibly difficult to get people to switch. And now Google, which made its fortune off the open web, is destroying it. 😰
