I was thinking about why I haven’t joined TikTok and realized something: if Twitter did not exist and launched tomorrow, I probably wouldn’t join it either. I’m done jumping between social networks now that I can easily post to my own microblog.

@manton I'm with you in theory but in reality I have friends on Facebook I want to stay in touch with, professional reasons to maintain a presence on LinkedIn and Twitter. And this ONE FRIEND who reads me on Tumblr and nowhere else.
@MitchWagner Yeah, I totally understand that. Everyone has different needs, which is also why we have cross-posting to Twitter, Tumblr, etc.
@manton Our teenage daughter wanted to get the app so I installed it and signed up. You're definitely not missing anything. It was like a non-stop stream of the worst of YouTube's trending videos.
@manton This is why I simultaneously miss Vine and cannot wait to try some things with Micro.blog video.
@manton @MitchWagner Yeah. If I could just get my friends to switch to their own blogs and distribute to the Social Media Biggies, I'd be so happy. But no bites so far, even with my offers of help. :(
@grayareas @manton I rememer the first time I tried making that pitch was 2008 or so. Didn't work then, and hasn't worked when I tried it intermittently since. Even as recently as a few months ago I made an announcement on Facebook that I was walking away and anybody interested in following me could find my posts on on my blog or Twitter or email. Didn't get more than one or two takers, and found I missed the conversation on Facebook.
@manton Hmmm.... I haven't tried cross-posting to Twitter because I thought I might prefer to use Twitter formatting in many cases (@mentions being a big example). But I think I'll switch it on now and see how I like it.
As for Tumblr: My solution there is to use feedrinse and IFTTT to share share to Tumblr, automatically skipping over images that originated on Tumblr in the first place.
@grayareas Likewise with my brother @limako. He goes so far as to gateway his Twitter posts back to micro.blog (rather than the other way around), purely because I care about micro.blog, but he lives in Twitter.
@manton I bailed at the first insinuation that TikTok was a tool of the Chinese state. Granted, it was pure confirmation bias: I was looking for reasons not to use another silo, this one utterly dominated by people one-third my age. ¯_(ツ)_/¯
@odd Yup, that happens in a lot of Markdown apps. I believe it’s a Markdown escape character as well. Doubling it up sometimes works. ¯\(ツ)/¯
