@jack @JohnPhilpin @Ron The lack of transparency is a red flag. Who made this? Why? How? They're hiring but they don't even have an About page? Either they're genuinely useless at making websites or it's some Silicon Valley-esque bullshit being peddled.

@jack @JohnPhilpin @Ron Hahahaha all I had to do was click their obscure globe icon and... bang! It's a blog on Medium. Of course it is. Also... don't worry, they're raising millions of dollars.

Seriously. 🙄

Refer a friend, get a free domain Introducing Universe Coins

It's like a scam for which only stupid people would fall.

@jack @simonwoods @JohnPhilpin Maybe Jack only sent the link, but I thoroughly checked it out . . . for about 20 sec, reading their claim to be providing custom domains, then posted my no silos comment. Do pigs fly yet?

@Ron @jack @JohnPhilpin Ron it's beautiful website building for free on your phone, what could possibly be questionable about such a promise come on now.

@simonwoods Maybe I'm just too old to appreciate the incredible promise in these amazing new technologies. That's why the old generations get swept away by the new thinkers. Excuse me while I go read my Whole Earth Catalog. This thing is really GREAT!!

@Ron I used pen and paper to achieve some tasks the other day. Unsure if I am allowed to associate with The Young People any longer.

@simonwoods I think you're okay, as long as it was a space pen. NASA started with pencils, which is all we used to use in accounting until that Whole Earth Catalog thingie came out!

@jack @JohnPhilpin @Ron @bradenslen Not to derail the derailment but I just discovered The Pudding even exists and quickly found an About page worthy of the name.

@simonwoods Hot takes aside, I thought Universe was a pretty neat tool when I last looked at it. These kinds of things can have really poor money strategies and still have novel ideas inside. So, yeah, I thought the editor was a nice, simple tool for building little web pages with blocks of text and pictures. I’m planning to use it for a project at the elementary school to see how the kids use it. (This seems like the rare technology that has enough color and expressiveness to be useful to me there—especially now that Byte is defunct.) If we can learn from the good tools, they can help us figure out how to craft the Indieweb. We will need more than just protocols.

@JohnPhilpin Every time they bring me pudding, I think they're just trying to shut up the old guy & all his stories. Maybe I should go turn on one of my radios. Chocolate is great, but I wish they'd use butterscotch more often. 😋

@kicks I love seeing exhibitions of potentially great technology. Just wish we didn't literally put a value on ventures that appear to be built on little more than the most basic idea of the technology; for me it seems inevitable the idea will either die or be subsumed by the leviathans.

IMO, WordPress webcapitan.com/blog/11-s... is the easiest most versatile CMS that one can work with. With enough time and patience at hand, you can make amazing things starting from absolute 0. Even with the installation itself (not that's needed, most hosting platforms have auto-installers) shouldn't take more than a day if you have no idea what you're doing. You don’t necessarily need to know any programming at all to install a basic WordPress theme and put some basic content into it.
