Downloaded my Foursquare archive (about 2500 check-ins over 8 years), thinking I might make it public and import it into my microblog. Micro.blog will always default to never storing any location information, but maybe a per-post option? Feedback welcome.

@manton I would assume only ever opt-in? As somebody who isn't interested in using the feature but puts a premium on privacy and accessible software, my only thought is that it is switched off by default.

@simonwoods Absolutely.

@manton Switched off by default but having a per-post option would be good. Personally, the only place I envision needing it would be for photos so I don't have to explicitly state where the photo was taken and can focus on my caption.

@manton I would be against having a blanket “yes” to posting locations. A per-post option would be nice to have. And of course it should be off by default.

Part of my concern: people have no problem sharing their location until it creates a problem or something in their life gives them fear (stalkers, “crazy” exes or etc). And at that point it can be too late to try to make it secret again. I’ve seen this scenario with a couple of friends.

@manton So what's the deal then, it just a log of where you were when you checked-in? Would this have a map element to it somehow? That would be the most useful I guess...

@kaa Yes, I'd want at least a small thumbnail map to go with each check-in, maybe similar to what we do in our app Sunlit.

@manton Hmm, I was thinking more along the lines of a single map, with multiple pins on it that you can zoom in and out from?

@manton had no idea you could do this. Been thinking about how I can use locations on my blog recently, it’s an interesting thought exercise at the very least.

@manton I use Swarm a lot but it’s private so per post option would be prefered, a little map pin icon I could choose to tap on or not. I like the sunlit map thing when I choose to connect my swarm checkins. If you can in anyway use the swarm DB to cross post a blog that would be nice

@manton I’d like to see some form of this. I’ve always seen @cleverdevil do this on his blog and thought it would be nice to do this in some way, even if it’s with OwnYourSwarm. I’ve also thought some form of metadata, a la DayOne, would be cool. That said, I’m sure much of this can be done with an iOS Shortcut and some text formatting.

@sku\_b @cleverdevil Thanks for mentioning Day One... That would be a good place to look for inspiration. (OwnYourSwarm does work partially with Micro.blog right now, but you just get the place name and not the location coordinates.)

@manton I have a Foursquare export and haven’t found anything to do with it yet. Sometimes when we are traveling to a previously visited destination I open the app to look for restaurants we liked/dis-liked. But otherwise I’ve stopped doing checkins.

@manton I don’t really feel coordinates would be necessary. Just the place name (like a landmark or building) or for most posts a generic city name would be enough for me. I’ve thought about this with some basic weather info.

@manton on the location issue, if you are looking at optionally storing location of post could image exif data be reviewed too?

@johnjohnston Good question. Currently we strip out EXIF from photos for privacy, and I want to keep doing that, but we could optionally look at the location, store it separately if enabled, and then still discard it from the photo.

@manton I am imagining that some time in the future I’ll be smart enough to use my (WordPress) blog photos to get them on a map. Micro.blog is certainly the easiest way to post photos to WordPress so it would be useful to have option to not strip exif. I currently do this sort of thing with Flickr photos. This might be a minority interest and not right for micro.blog but I thought I’d ask anyhow.

@johnjohnston Ah, got it. Yeah, I wasn't thinking about WordPress, but I could see that as a potential option. Thanks!

@johnjohnston Nice I recall this type of mash up a way to showcase the cool Future of APIs working openly is Web 2.0 The Machine is Us/ing Us YouTube I also recall this awesome talk from Bret Victor on why APIs should not have been the way forward YouTube

@adamprocter thanks, I knew the Michael Wesch stuff. Watching the second now. A bit over my head;-) I like a few APIs that are easy for non-devs & don’t change over time. Flickr is a 🌟 open street map, giphy & freesound are fun.

@manton @johnjohnston Yeah, Micro.blog and Sunlit are the hands-down easiest way to post photos to WordPress. Most of the time my photos are from around the house/neighborhood, so stripping the EXIF is a perfect default, but there are times when I’m photographing a public location where I wouldn’t mind a toggle option.
