@AlanRalph I would love to own all my comments. But even on Micro.blog they live on some server that @manton owns. I have no idea how this can be solved, but I would love this comment to now appear on my site somewhere, with a link to your post (made up in the @ name part of the comment).

@kaa @AlanRalph Yeah, this has always been kind of an unfinished part of the Micro.blog infrastructure, because many people (including me) didn't want comments on our own blogs. Planning to solve this in 2 phases: soon, optionally allowing a conversation to be included on your blog; and later, a better archive on Micro.blog-hosted blogs of your own replies.

@manton Awesome news! On the days that I don't post something, I do often write comments. One of my favourite things to do is read my blog every day, except from several years ago. My own comments can only add to that experience :).

@manton @kaa I would like an option to include comments but not have it on by default. I'm fine with my replies being ephemeral especially since they may reside on someone else's space. Admittedly, this has been influenced by the chilling effect on my online speech due to current environmental factors, if you know what I mean.

@kaa @manton I like this, but I wish it would go further and display not only MB comments but Indieweb replies from blogs outside of MB, plus Twitter replies. IMHO MB comments would be a good first step, but showing the discussion between individual blogs on different platforms is the whole reason I bought into the whole Indieweb movement. Without having that it feels like only having one oar in the water. cc. @AlanRalph

@bradenslen @kaa @AlanRalph Showing tweets along with other posts in a timeline is against Twitter's terms of service. Might be an option using Brid.gy, but it's probably better for Micro.blog to focus on blogs. We've also been recording incoming Webmentions for about a year to potentially use later.

@bix Can you explain a little more about what Medium does well for replies? Is it mostly the user experience?

@bix Got it. That's good feedback, thanks!

@manton I’ve had a note to raise a question with you about this ever since you mentioned it on a Core Intutition some time ago: if you’re going to show/include the Micro.blog conversation wholesale on the member’s blog, what about replies from those who are muted (that the member may never even know exist in the M.b conversation)? Is the on-blog conversation display going to take that into account? And if so, is it going to reflect the current state of the mute list, or the state when the reply was made, or…? // @kaa @AlanRalph

@smokey Great question. I wasn't planning on applying muting, but I probably should... It should hide anything muted by the user whose blog it is. If I'm muted someone, I probably don't want their replies on my site.

@AlanRalph If you look at websites of “hard-core IndieWebers” ;-) like @aaronpk, @cleverdevil, @EddieHinkle, @jgmac1106, you’ll see examples of how the IndieWeb believes this should work: you create an “in-reply-to” post on your website with your comment and it gets Webmention-ed into the comments of the post you’re replying to (or the Micro.blog conversation; if any of them reply to this conversation, you’ll see it in action here).

Right now, it requires a bit of extra plumbing in many blogging systems and/or specialized clients (so, for instance, you can’t use the Micro.blog app to create a reply on your site to a post you read in your Micro.blog Timeline); it’s not yet simple or common enough that it meshes completely with, say, Manton’s vision for the Micro.blog UI. I think eventually all of this will work itself out and there will be simple/average-people-friendly UI/UX for all of it, but for the moment it’s still relatively early. // @kaa

@manton I am also looking forward to the day when someone I mute doesn’t show up outside my timeline (e.g. in Discover).

@smokey @AlanRalph haha, yay! I'm reached the "Hard-core Indiewebber" status 😆 This is my official reply as an example of posting from my own site. If you click the "date/permalink" link for this reply in the Micro.blog UI, you'll find that instead of linking to this conversation it will link to my reply on my website

@ronguest I’m happy that hasn’t happened to me recently (there was a period of time where it was happening often—and I reported it—and it always threw me into fight-or-flight mode) 🤞

@smokey going for the trifecta - I’d also like replies from someone I follow to someone I’ve blocked to be removed from my timeline. My idea of the ethos of MB when it comes to my ability to control what I see.

@EddieHinkle I think anyone who’s actively building new things for the IndieWeb gets “hard-core IndieWebber” status in my book ;-)

@ronguest Yes, right now I’m seeing that pretty often; I think @manton mentioned that was on the list of improvements when we discussed bugs/gaps in muting last year, but I can’t recall for sure. (It gets a bit tricky when the person you’re following replies to blocked-person and others…what do you do then? But at least the incremental step of dropping a reply only addressed to blocked-person seems warranted.)
