It’s nearly mid June and that means Mango season is upon us!
This is the Sindhura variety — sweet and slightly tart at the same time. Comes straight from a friend’s 100% certified organic farm and orchard.
@purisubzi My grandmother had a mango tree. I loved them, but didn’t appreciate what jewels they were until I saw them in the grocery store expensively-priced, after I left Miami to go to college. 🥰
@jean Even here they are expensive fruit! I can't afford a few varieties because they are so priced out of my budget. But glad to have friends and neighbours who have small farms or land holdings that grow them and send some my way.
@purisubzi @jean Yum! I used to have a variety of mangoes growing up in Delhi. When we moved to Bombay, I also started to have the Alphoso variety, which quickly became my favorite. Indian mangoes spoiled me. I've never developed a taste for the Mexican varieties available here.
@samgrover @jean I’ve never had Mexican mangoes! Either they were out of season or ridiculously expensive whenever I visited the US.
Am not a huge fan of the Alphonso variety. It’s too sweet for me. I like mangoes that are a bit tart. My favourite is the Raspuri variety, where you just lop the top off and squeeze to reveal the pulpiest, freshest mango juice ever!
@purisubzi @samgrover This sent me down a rabbit hole of Florida mango research, starting with the University of Florida Agricultural School's article. They list over 30 varieties. Based on the details there, I suspect my grandmother's tree was Irwin based on the large size, shape and color. The chart says red, but hers had hints of yellow and purple. We used bring them home in large grocery sacks. My parents made many jars of mango chutney, and we kids gorged on the enormous fruit. My mother used to say that you really should eat them in the bathtub, because they were so messy to peel, so much juice. Apparently it's my equivalent of Proust's madeleine.
