I haven't examined recent AI research to any degree so I can't comment on whether machine learning is able to accurately parse \"tone\" of individuals and contexts right now -- maybe it is possible for AI to do it. Where I'm more skeptical, less sanguine, is on the implications when these machine learning/algorithms are applied by humans to humans.
\n\n
I think we've seen how algorithms, once used for pragmatic means, can be inadvertently or even purposefully used to discriminate against subsets of people; the example I'm thinking of is how zipcode/location is used to discriminate against people in certain neighbourhoods when applying for mortgages/loans in the US (though I don't have citations for this right now). To me, tools like machine learning are double-edged swords: all well and good if it's used for its original purpose, but am I prepared to let it be used against me?
\n\n
And it'd certainly be nice to have an automaton (instead of a human community manager) screen out negativity; however, how easy is it to move the line from \"indecent in our cultural milieu\" to \"indecent because I don't want to deal with tough things\"? Sometimes an indecent, vile message still prompt self-reflection and a more open mind in spite (or because) of its vileness. Part of me worries that algorithms ultimately end up being exploited to reinforce our own biases and narrow our horizons, which is why I wonder about consensus over decency/negativity, and how to arrive at one without biasing the algorithm towards narrowness.
\n\n
Apologies for derailing the thread into a more philosophical ramble - I'm not in IT/programming, so my thoughts tend toward \"how will this be used?\" :)
\n","url":"https://micro.blog/vega/4691806","date_published":"2019-07-25T06:09:07+00:00","author":{"name":"Vega","url":"http://greatskyriver.net","avatar":"https://cdn.micro.blog/photos/96/https%3A%2F%2Fmicro.blog%2Fvega%2Favatar.jpg","_microblog":{"username":"vega"}},"_microblog":{"date_relative":"2019-07-25 06:09","date_timestamp":1564034947,"is_favorite":false,"is_bookmark":false,"is_deletable":false,"is_conversation":true,"is_linkpost":false,"is_mention":true}},{"id":"4690924","content_html":"
@ayjay Very true, but the limitations of individual scope could be overcome if enough individuals do it and feed off each other.
\n\n
I subscribe to your and @robinsloan's newsletters (Sloan came to my attention both via your blog and someone else's - identity long forgotten - reference of Fat Gold), and I consider both newsletters as my \"serendipitous connections\" to new ideas. Serendipity in newspapers and record stores is dependent on unlike things being adjacent to each other. Discovery during \"Web 1.0\" was entirely through hyperlinking via the personal website: I might follow a hyperlink to a website because it was like the page that linked it; but might leave the website through an unlike but adjacent hyperlink. It's the caprice, whimsy, lateral thinking, and uniqueness of the curator that decides what link stands next to what else -- something that machine algorithms just can't do. These days we rely too much on a machine serving us hyperlinks; a return to human-curated hyperlinks is perhaps a way of raising serendipity.
\n\n
// CC'ing @kicks @bradenslen as I've had past convos with them about hyperlinking.
\n","url":"https://micro.blog/vega/4690488","date_published":"2019-07-25T00:16:16+00:00","author":{"name":"Vega","url":"http://greatskyriver.net","avatar":"https://cdn.micro.blog/photos/96/https%3A%2F%2Fmicro.blog%2Fvega%2Favatar.jpg","_microblog":{"username":"vega"}},"_microblog":{"date_relative":"2019-07-25 00:16","date_timestamp":1564013776,"is_favorite":false,"is_bookmark":false,"is_deletable":false,"is_conversation":true,"is_linkpost":false,"is_mention":true}},{"id":"4690381","content_html":"
@amit We first have to come to a consensus on what constitutes \"negativity\", and how screening against negativity doesn't represent a form of censorship. I find it a gnarly claim. My parents spoke English at home and encouraged me to associate with the majority cultures we lived in; my family upbringing was quite Westernized as a result. I have memories of parents saying things like: \"We assimilate because we are entering the greater 'host culture', and we must be open to them just as they were open in welcoming us immigrants.\" That assimilation wasn't coercive, as in your family's case -- I couldn't imagine the pressure and anxiety that must cause! But assimilation runs the risk of forgetting my roots. The more I live, the more I realize how valuable my mother culture is to my identity... and they were things I dismissed as \"irrelevant\" when I was younger!
\n\n
While I'm grateful that I can navigate Western culture quite well as a result of my upbringing, I do feel that something of my heritage had been lost along the way. It's not too late to embrace it though, even if I don't do it as well as my peers (and that's no shame!). I think it's inevitable to lose something while gaining something else, so it's a matter of holding both in tension, returning to my heritage while also valuing the goodness that Western culture has given to me (and it has, a lot).
\n","url":"https://micro.blog/vega/4590870","date_published":"2019-07-18T23:28:35+00:00","author":{"name":"Vega","url":"http://greatskyriver.net","avatar":"https://cdn.micro.blog/photos/96/https%3A%2F%2Fmicro.blog%2Fvega%2Favatar.jpg","_microblog":{"username":"vega"}},"_microblog":{"date_relative":"2019-07-18 23:28","date_timestamp":1563492515,"is_favorite":false,"is_bookmark":false,"is_deletable":false,"is_conversation":true,"is_linkpost":false,"is_mention":true}},{"id":"4574779","content_html":"
@garciabuxton @Miraz @smokey Thanks Joyce for sharing that link. It's definitely not just an American phenomenon. You're not alone!
\n\n
Smokey said:
\n\n
\n
I wonder if there’s a qualitative difference in feeling between those who lost their language heritage via “state action” (in most cases, some form of colonization) and those who lost it via parental (in)action after emigration?
\n
\n\n
Yes, I'm sure there's a difference that's not limited to language. To use Southeast Asia as an example, there's a difference between being a Malaysian, living in Malaysia, rediscovering Malaysian history pre-colonization by the British.... and being a child of Malaysian emigrants who is born in Australia. On one hand, you're a part of a majority culture -- influenced by colonialism and the West, yes, but still the majority. On the other hand, you're a minority living within a majority culture. And there are differences between being an indigenous minority who is currently being marginalized by the now-majority colonists/emigrants (eg. indigenous Australians), and being an indigenous majority who is no longer directly subjugated (eg. Southeast Asian nations that were former British colonies).
\n\n
I'm a third-culture kid, have been part of majority and minority cultures at different times, and I've constantly wrestled in my relationship with my mother tongue and my identity at large. I don't think I fall neatly into either category of colonized vs. emigrated. So while generalities can be helpful, I also hesitate to categorize the experiences of nations and individuals in too much detail, as they can be pretty complex.
\n","url":"https://micro.blog/vega/4574779","date_published":"2019-07-18T04:49:33+00:00","author":{"name":"Vega","url":"http://greatskyriver.net","avatar":"https://cdn.micro.blog/photos/96/https%3A%2F%2Fmicro.blog%2Fvega%2Favatar.jpg","_microblog":{"username":"vega"}},"_microblog":{"date_relative":"2019-07-18 04:49","date_timestamp":1563425373,"is_favorite":false,"is_bookmark":false,"is_deletable":false,"is_conversation":true,"is_linkpost":false,"is_mention":true}},{"id":"4414495","content_html":"
@bradenslen I follow The Everyday Novelist podcast, by a self published author.
