@loosenut Well that explains a lot… Especially my feeling disconnected from the scene, and the more dance oriented I felt a lot of tracks were. Plus, I have to be upfront about a lot of my choices in electronic music lean more towards dub-techno, downtempo, and chill styles.

But, I will mention that I was focused more on the link rot issue. I’m more concerned that the idea that automatically swapping an URL that is generating 404/301 errors for a URL that points to the Wayback Machine is not necessarily the only option that should be considered.

(FWIW — my posts are being archived on the Wayback Machine as well, but I also have 4-5 more backups going on as well. I think I’m getting a bit wiser about this whole game of making backups as much as possible. But I do have more to say about backups as well.)

@clare_hooley IMO - I’m surprised the ICO or FCC isn’t more proactive in these areas. It shouldn’t be too difficult to write some bots / crawlers that can analyze the content of a site and look for things that are outside the law(s). The whole thing could be automated, down to sending out notices for violations. The fines they could charge would easily bring in more money than they’d spend on building / operating the scanning system.

@clare_hooley I was aware that there was controversy around Google Fonts, but wasn’t certain that the issue would fall under GDPR. By the number of sites that still call Google for fonts I’m guessing most devs don’t believe it to be applicable (WordPress calls Google for fonts by default, for example).

@clare_hooley So, Article 5 has specific loopholes in it under which most media embeds actually operate:

This is why you don’t typically see consent for a lot of embeds. YouTube runs into trouble because it makes calls to other domains like googleadservices.com, doubleclick.net — hence the reason they have youtube-nocookie as an alternative.

AFAIK — most sites use embeds assuming the Article 5 exceptions. Personally, I don’t want to run afoul of anything that might fall outside those restrictions… So, I just don’t use embeds (except for HTML5 embeds, which are completely Article 5 and 6 compliant).

Yes, social media embeds absolutely fall under GDPR, primarily because they act in the same way as a lot of advertising embeds do.

@manton I think it’s premature to believe that “X has survived” anything. As long as they keep getting fines like 120M Euros for violating the Digital Services Act(1)
\nthey aren’t clear of anything. And, there are still pending lawsuits surrounding Grok’s Deepfake issues(2).

When Elon took over, there was a major issue with the debt of the company, which only got worse as Elon had to secure more loans for the company. Since doing this a number of lenders had had to write off the multiple billions of dollars of debt. This isn’t sustainable, and eventually they will come calling on the company to make good on the remaining debts.

\n

Elon’s business strategy has been risky, at best. And, he’s been lucky to have been unscathed in this political climate. However, that is likely changing soon, and I think Twitter and Elon will run into some very strong headwinds.

\n

Originally, I saw a timeline of five-ten years before either (a) Elon left X, or (b) it imploded. That may have been extended a bit by this administration. But I remain convinced that there will be some serious issues.

\n

(Side note: I’m unconvinced that the information we are seeing about X/xAI as a business is reliable. Before Elon’s takeover there was a public reporting requirement that was frequently double-checked by others. Since taking the company private the numbers that are being reported by X have been questionable.)

This is what I was suggesting to @brennan a moment ago. That initial resistance is friction or inertia. It takes more energy to get past that, but then it becomes easier.

@brennan Absolutely, there is circular logic at play. OTOH, I understand the lock-in issue as well. It is the most difficult thing to overcome, akin to inertia and/or friction, once the initial resistance is overcome then things will move more easily. But, getting the energy required can be multiples of the energy needed to sustain the movement.

To me this is more generational. The tech illiterate tend to be those who weren’t raised with this technology. We cited the example of our mothers. Mine was born in the 1930s. This technology didn’t start to emerge until she was in her 50s, and she wasn’t pushed to use it until she was in her 60s. Of course, she only had a surface level knowledge of how to use it.

Something that should be recognized here is that there are more generations that have grown up with this technology, and are more literate, than those who are not. That’s not to say there aren’t those who are less literate, but the overall population that aren’t literate has greatly decreased since the 1970s or 1980s.

\n

I don’t look at this as a literacy issue. I look at it as an incentivizing situation. Most people aren’t incentivized to change. They are willing to accept the abuse (yes, I stick by that word choice) of these massive corporations because they haven’t been incentivized to change.

I tried to avoid the trap of using my background and experience in writing this response. Most of it centers on addressing specific points you brought up in your post. The two paragraphs where I talked about Linux were not about advocating you (or anyone for that matter) switch to it. I’ve been down the route of being the zealot before, and I understand that it doesn’t work. When someone is genuinely interested then they will ask questions.

Those two paragraphs where I referenced Linux were about addressing the idea that an individual making a change doesn’t make a difference. Linux was long seen that way: it’s irrelevant, there isn’t a market for it, etc. Now, however, the market is growing. Sure it’s not dominant, but it’s growing to the point where less technical users are starting to turn to it.

Your proposition of looking at this from the perspective of your (or my) mom (mine’s also passed) is a different matter. I think we can all agree that there are people in our lives that are either unlikely or unable to change. Maybe at some point that is a fate we all have to accept. But is that a fate that we should accept for ourselves?

I cut out most of the final section because it became more about advocacy for change, instead of trying to raise awareness of abuse. I had originally written it to be a call to action. How to move from accepting abuse to working on building a plan to change. It’s the same thing that many abuse survivors have had to do. Perhaps I’ll resurrect it as a separate piece.

@alyn Yeah, most indie authors and publishers will use a distributor instead of dealing with setting up their own supplier accounts on the different platforms. That’s where the expense comes into play.

@alyn Let me step in and explain why so many indie authors go Amazon and not other platforms.

Book distributed platforms charge for their service. The more platforms, the more expensive it is. Amazon sales literally dwarf all other platforms. The second closest is Apple. Aside from those two all other platforms will yield %10 or less in sales, total.

When you balance the cost of distribution versus the sales reality it is really hard for many indie authors and publishers to choose to use other platforms as it can actually end up cutting or even eliminating their profits.

It’s a stupid f***ing reality, but one we are stuck with until either some Government or the legal system steps in and takes a sledgehammer to Amazon and the distributors.

@manton My opinion, ActivityPub needs to make more progress in supporting features that the Fediverse as a whole needs. For example: e2e private messages. Another example, identity management.

Look at the forum side of the Fediverse. We have PieFed, Lemmy, Kbin and several other platforms. While they are compatible on core features, each has taken to implementing their extensions that are incompatible. I don’t think we want Mastodon heading that direction (which if they start rushing features could happen).

@manton Mastodon has close to 9K servers, and 8.6M users. A decade in, they are well past being a startup. Mastodon has to be handled as a mature platform, to do anything less would be irresponsible. The Fediverse doesn’t need platform like X where half of the features are rushed out half-baked at best.

@manton I found a better solution (from a theme standpoint). Any of the themes that support microhooks can just create an empty: layouts/partials/microhook-description.html
