@JohnBrady @ReaderJohn @dwalbert I know I said “without comment,” but I could talk endlessly about healthcare, both as patient and employee. I’ll limit myself to two things, on the patient side.

Up until a few years ago, I had the old school family practitioner. I’ll skip the detailed praise but I can tell you that nothing in my medical experience has improved since he retired. I’ve never met my current PCP (3 years now), and if he stays my PCP for the next 40 years I genuinely do not expect to ever meet him. Now, I don’t believe MyChart has improved my access to information at all (that access is nothing more than an illusion, I think), but it’s the changed relationship that I despise. The numbers used to live in the professional’s office. Access to those numbers — or, more importantly, interaction with those numbers — was through a person, a person who knew a lot about those numbers and who knew me. Now, with MyChart, I have numbers in my house, and in my pocket, which I can plug into the 10001110101 Machine while I try to get a stranger known as “PCP” to explain them to me.

This is not a MyChart bug, it’s feature. 

\n

I’ll just give one concrete example — an extreme case but not uncommon as healthcare practice goes: when you’re 8 months pregnant and the results from your ultrasound get uploaded Friday evening with no curtesy call from your doctor or anyone, so you get to spend several days wondering about the notes on your baby’s highly concerningly small abdominal circumference. Things turned out okay in this case. Even though we still induced early because of it, the other numbers were okay so we were still able to wait a couple more weeks — and we learned how inaccurate ultrasound tests can be. We knew they could be inaccurate; what we didn’t know was that they can be highly inaccurate — off by 44% in this case.

I would simply submit that MyChart is not a solution to something your doctor might miss on a Friday evening; it is a cause. To put it another way: the above example is the MyChart system working perfectly.

I’m not after anyone’s Luddite card 🤓. In fact, I’ll take a point from Cal Newport 10 years ago: MyChart is not a technology, it’s just another bad use of technology.

They’ve always had an utterly terrible phone service that has made any rescheduling needs a nightmare. Now it’s a nightmare with AI.
