@manton @bloftin2 Happy to talk about our Peertube issues. We were looking to run Peertube, Mastodon, and Pixelfed as a “one stop shop” for our skateboard group and have our micro.blog as the front page. The hosting load was about 65GB of video with 8-10GB of growth per year and around 5GB of photos.

I shopped around for a VPS host that could handle a naked Debian 12 server and Yunohost, prefferably outside the US to “avoid and imperial entanglements”. Problem was it was next to impossible to find one that could handle our very low needs. Storage wasn’t the problem. Storage is cheap. It was RAM and bandwidth. 100GB of storage, 2 processors and 16GB of RAM was $50/month at the cheapest I could find. Running these services ate up all of the resources before we even got user traffic into the mix. It would have been $80 - $100/month to do it right at the minimum. I would have been less than a dollar for our users to help support it but they were still confused that we wanted to leave big social media even after we gave exhaustive explanations.

The management was another beast. Patching, crons, updates. It was about 10 hours a week on top of my full time and family life to keep it alive.

We did have some success with Mastodon but getting users to migrate was hard. Same with Pixelfed. Great experience but people “understand” Instagram and their ilk and got so confused with how federated software worked. The phone apps lacked the polish of the big players and it frustrated the user base. Eventually, it was only three of us using it with any regularity.

The combined cost of hosting, training, and evangelizing honestly took the fun out of it especially after we saw that users we not coming on board. We settled on Discord and still use micro.blog as the frontend for group identity.
