@Denny Great. The deal is here that most packages you install will come via Mint’s repositories (which in turn mostly come from Ubuntu). Each major distro manages the software that’s available to users in the repositories, including (in theory) validating the security and trustworthiness of the packages they offer. The downside is this makes each distro an intermediary between developers and users. Developers can make their own packages for each distro and distribute them independently (which we just took advantage of with VScodium), but this is onerous.

Flatpak is a cross-distro format intended to make it easier to ship directly to users. You’ll usually receive updates sooner with Flatpak. To maintain security without the distro’s oversight, flatpaks run in a sandbox with fewer privileges, which seems to include access to network files in this case. Personally, I tend to go with flatpak if it is significantly more up-to-date than what my distro offers. You can browse them at flathub.org/.

@Denny an interesting read Denny, welcome aboard! I posted recently about my ten-year journey with Linux. It’s definitely a learning experience but very rewarding in my opinion to use truly open tools. I think Mint is a great choice and would be my recommendation to a new user. If you want to try the non-flatpak install of vs codium to see if it sorts your network problem (sounds likely IMO) follow the steps for Debian/Ubuntu on the website vscodium.com/. After completing step 2 you should be able to install and manage the non-flatpak version from the normal Linux Mint software manager application, or just run the last command in step 3 (which is all the software manager is doing behind the scenes anyway)
