Last time when I was posting on 'pervert glasses', specifically the meta/rayban thing, I came to discuss accessiblity aspects with @elettrona who deliberately chose to avoid Meta, and found a good company in https://letsenvision.com

Their careful design makes bystanders aware what the glasses are doing. I do not know how they deal with cloud connection, but I see that they partner with Google.

Yes ... in the meaning of the word we came to understand it, in the connotation left by the widespread abuse of marketeers and greedy salespeople.

Imagine you walked your town or city, and the storefront of the bakery gave no sign at all that there was a bakery inside. Or that the market salesperson on the square didn't shout that all their wares were at half price before the market closed.

Imagine your FOSS projects having no accompanying website or README, no code documentation, and only single-char variable names.

We all advertise. But in the normal dictionary sense of the word. We want to let others know what we are doing, who we are, and why things matter.

So much of our language has been hijacked, captured by hypercapitalism. We have to win these words back for common use, not let them become the newspeak of the day, be redefined.

Sorry to be triggered by this, \"advertisement\" is but one word. But whole dictionaries have been stolen from us already, impovering us.

Taking this a step further, there's even Opportunity that flows from the disruptive introduction (dumping) of LLMs into global society and damn all externalities.

AI puts yet another layer of indirection between relationships that people have with each other. Its widespread use and the \"digital transformation\" trend in general (another bad hype) leads to further erosion of the social fabric of society. To the benefit of the power brokers who own the technology.

But the other way to look at it is that Big Tech by offering all that, is in fact *retracting* from the market of directly serving people and their daily needs. Their inhumane services thus leave open market space, that can be filled in by small players that serve this niche instead.

How many people are excited to bump into an AI chatbot online and on the phone, when they need support from a corporation? No one.

Sustainable business and sustainable open social systems are the way.

I agree. But also this is the awareness long-raised. We all know this. Our timelines are full of us saying this every day.

Much as I liked @andrewrk talk, three quarters of it are awareness-raising, one quarter is the message of hope: Show the pathway where solutions are.

In our messages to others we should get to the opposite ratio, and talk three quarters about solutions. About can-do things, and ways in which people can chime in and participate. So that an energizing path follows awareness, a path of discovery on how our passions fit those of the next person we collaborate with. Solution orientation. Turn big problems into a challenge, a quest, an adventure. Undertaken collectively.

Awareness, discovery, activation, participation, proactive engagement, solutions. This is a process. Social experience design (SX) defines CALM culture, for Constructive activism-led movements. Where activist values become engrained in the works we create.

Great talk. \"We must believe that Humanity is generally good\".

This is the premise of Social experience design (SX), in a quite holistic approach.

Scrolling my timeline this morning, like most mornings, I found the black pill, the doom and gloom we project to each other to tell about the state of apocalypse.

Our real bad actors are a tiny minority, but they win and keep winning, because we let them. The majority of us are common everyday people, sharing very similar basic needs. Have aspirations to lead a meaningful life. We want to be involved with positive, uplifting things, follow passions, unleash our creativity.

Software should serve that. Coding is social. We have to learn how to cocreate and create works that leave positive societal imprint. Joyful creation!

Fediverse is full of activists. Awareness-raising. But that's just the tip of the spear. We need pathways to solutions. The shaft gives impetus. We need only follow dreams.

Seen your edit of OpenVibe being a candidate. It isn't on my lists, as the delightful initiative only collects FOSS projects.

Thing is, with proprietary software backed by a company, there's always a rationale and incentive to providing it. It is nearly never \"from the good of our hearts\" :)

My advice is to look closely at the Privacy Policy, to see if you agree with the data collection.

Yes! Better support for different modes of communication. Offline we rarely stand on a soapbox on a market square shouting at a crowd, and as we are weaving in and out of different social contexts we switch between communication modes. The backbone of the fediverse is a distributed microblog, with very particular social dynamics. Our posts are public, advertised, reach unknown strangers, people chime in on context collapse. Soapbox comms lead to unhealthy influencer culture, in-groups, purity spiral anti-patterns.

There's both a safety and inclusion aspect. Block and mute are harsh, cruel tools for ostracisation and shadowbanning, should be reserved for bad actors only. Yet its used for curation and timeline filtering. Their use is understandable, there's nothing else, but there's an extreme human laziness if people who know each other for years just slam the block button. How about the decency to bring up a grievance. It makes fedi shallow, parasocial.

I think on the delightful fediverse clients list there's FediSuite that has a Bluesky plugin. But the project itself is AI-coded and quite young, I don't know if its good.

Most recent project to implement #ActivityPub and join the #fediverse on this basis was #Vutuv, a jobs social network (LinkedIn alternative). Perhaps it is proper #ActivityPub Groups support. Lemmy already calls that \"Community\". And perhaps the retracted FEP-2100: Unbound Group and Organization to have Groups be independent of instances / multi-instance spanning, can be implemented in mainstream fedi to have a real fedi native concept of Groups (i.e. the abstract concept, not depending on an implementation detail)..

The kind of unfriendly, hostile activism against anyone who even *muses* about future role of LLMs in society, is bound to be ineffective. It's highly unstrategic, unorganized, and only amounts to \"πŸ™ˆπŸ™‰πŸ‘Ή we'll shield ourselves off, and let it happen\".

I think LLMs are inhumane tech, for how its dumped into society and damn all externalities, and because the Epstein class owns the tech. So awareness-raising on all the dangers is good. But it should lead to activation on solution-oriented pathways. That also requires thinking about solutions, having discussions where things can be called by their name.

A big opportunity imho is that with AI, Big Tech *retracts* from serving people, putting even more inhumane machine layers between us. Eroding social fabric.

That leaves market space for small people-driven initiatives to occupy, and offer that instead.

Activism based on ostracization and bashing in skulls isn't that. It is \"we divide ourselves to be conquered\".

#Fediverse is a *social* network, right? About being different from corporate anti-social media. Has ambitions to be more diverse, inclusive, cohesive. To provide inter-community social networking where people with similar interests find each other and interact.

Like the #ActivityPub developer community, for instance. The group of people who make all this possible in the first place. Together they uphold the fediverse technology ecosystem and are collectively responsible for evolving it. They chose fediverse as their communication medium, dogfooding their creations, even though this comes with its disadvantages. #Microblogging is ephemeral and fleety and discussions are dispersed and fragmented. There are clear points of improvements for the #fedi, frequently discussed.

What's very odd is that most AP devs hardly:

1. Engage with other AP devs posts.
2. Boost each other's msgs for visibility.
3. Use hashtags for discoverability.

Low-hanging fruit for improvement?

Tailwind is becoming an ever more heavy framework. I once bumped into a drop-in replacement for #Tailwind that offered just the #CSS classes with the same name in a single stylesheet file. But I can't for the life of me remember the name of this #FOSS project. Does anyone have a clue?

If I compare #ActivityPub #fediverse of today with that of a couple of years ago (as my acount perceives it), these are some of my observations:

- Being on a well-moderated instance I see a quieter, calmer fediverse.

- Less drama, performative activism, and purity spiral anti-patterns reach my timeline.

- People are genuine in their posts, yet doom & gloom dominate the feed.

- There are less posts than there used to be.

- In terms of interactions / engagement fediverse feels like a ghost town.

- But there are plenty nice discussions to participate in.

- People boost less, yet that is how we can grow and foster healthy culture at the same time.

- Posts with high engagement depend on weird virality dynamics, or relate to recognized influencers.

- In that sense this microblog space isn't much different than other platforms.

My #SocialExperience on this account is shaped by my history of years-long fedi / AP / FOSS advocacy, that made me choose whom to follow and who followed me.

Remember the recent #news that the #Dutch government chose for #sovereignty in their prudent decision not to let the critical infrastructure around #DigiD be managed by a foreign (US) commercial enterprise?

Well, the more recent news is that the Chief Privacy Officer of the Dutch #government, who was behind this initiative, has been fired. In the #petition I shared below Pieter van Oordt is called a \"whistleblower\". But that is an inaccurate description for a person who is just doing their job, and doing it well: Protecting our #privacy!

At any one time the number of good normal everyday people having the same basic needs for simple happy life in freedom, far far outnumber the relatively minor group of truly bad actors. These people are involved in countless uplifting and positive activities every day. Our task should be to raise awareness to that and offer countless pathways for people to join up in these constructive efforts, so that every person becomes enabled to contribute their 2 cents worth to making solutions grow and prosper.

Interesting term and approach. I came to the fediverse as an ActivityPub tech advocate and community facilitator from 2017 onwards, on a quest for what I call Residential social networking.

The concept is the same. My definition of social networking is \"any direct or indirect human interaction between people\". A residential social network has the objective to engage people *offline* in a geographical region, a town, city, or rural area, in order to strengthen social cohesion between people, and support the local economy.

Problem of fediverse-we-have is that it went sideways and is no longer a suitable enabling technology, unfortunately. Course correction is required, plus a healthy commons based ecosystem.
