@jekratz yeah, it’s a fancy new Dometic one. Even has a little contraption inside for making ice cubes, though I don’t expect to really ever use it. We wanted one from the CFX5 line, and had expected to get the more common 45L size, but ended up with 55L instead. It’s been great so far.

One of the small yet nice advantages of having an electric cooler is that I can plug it in inside and stage the food I’m bringing well ahead of time, instead of having to go get ice on the morning of the trip and then pack the cooler.

I’m celebrating National Park Week by camping in 5 national parks: Yosemite, Oregon Caves, Olympic, Mt Rainier, Bryce Canyon.

@mihobu also take note that Ohio and Arizona have different window tinting laws, as do many of the states in between. Something to consider when choosing what level (actual darkness doesn’t matter much when it comes to UV/heat rejection). We went lighter to match CA’s rules (since we drive thru often, including this Weds).

@mihobu Yup! I would never stay with regular tint after having it. We decided on the highest grade (IR+ nanoceramic, specifically FormulaOne Stratos) we could find a local licensed installer for.

Nanoceramic IR is a small step down, but would still make a big difference for less cash. We did NOT do the windshield, tho, which is the biggest offender for heat transfer. There are several brands and if the installer can’t tell you exactly what they use and what its TSER is (not IRR) then find a new one.

I spent much of the weekend updating and transitioning the Treasured Places website from wordpress back to html.

I made lots of improvements, most notably a filtering mechanism for the list of objectives. Still a few more things to improve, but a solid upgrade.

I’m excited to mark off these 6 unvisited counties on my upcoming trip—wrapping up California and teeing up both Oregon and Washington for completion.

@joelhamill I hope you do! We rented a (non fancy) campervan and generally stayed at free overnight spots. We skipped a model with a toilet, as it’s not hard to find public ones there. We occasionally paid for a campground for the shower, but also found some free ones along the way.

@manton I’m still super disappointed that we managed to allow social networking (connecting people together, a central promise of the web) to turn into social media (cheap distribution/surveillance channel primarily focused on reach and reliant on just 2-3 platforms). @apoorplayer for some of us, it’s just something that’s been a part of how we’ve always “shown up” online. Given the specific era when blogging sorta took off, it makes sense that 40-60 year olds would have been the prime demographic. Also makes sense that so many have white collar tech jobs.

Crazy to see that, since 2024, I’ve been to exactly 1043 US counties, which is a full 33% of the US. Of those, 630 of those have been my first visit to that county, exactly 1/5th of the US. Wow! 🤯🤯🤯

I was constantly on the lookout for beer cheese soup during our last road trip, finding only a single mediocre bowl at a brewery. So my wife did some digging and found the only spot in Phoenix that seems to be serving it and surprised me with lunch out today.

Today we tracked down the simple gravesite of Scotty Philips, who is often regarded as the guy who saved the bison from extinction.

When only a few hundred bison were left in the US, he made the decision to grow a herd to more than a thousand, which he distributed to ranchers around the country specifically to help rebuild the population.

\n

If you’ve ever seen a bison in the wild, there’s a very good chance that it is a descendent from his herd.
