\nYour Small Imprecise Ask Is a Big Waste of Their Time
\n\n\nImprecise asks from managers and leaders cause a disproportionate amount of turmoil and wheel-spinning. To combat this, leaders should be very precise with the amount of time investment they’re asking for when they ask for things.

I’ve had this experience as a direct report. As a manager, I tend to be a little too precise in my requests. I often prescribe the entire process. After reading this, I’ll try to adjust to being more precise about the amount of effort I expect rather than the exact process to take.

I can attest that there is a good way and many not good ways to stack firewood. It took me two winters to get it right. It also took me two winters to learn about seasoned and unseasoned wood.

I spent most of the pandemic suffering from the free-range fantasy. I even put a couple of offers in on homes on bigger plots of land. But I had eventually realized that one of the byproducts of the free-range fantasy would be isolation from family and close friends. It would have been just me and my girlfriend, out in the woods. While it’s tempting, I’m old enough now to know it wouldn’t be good for my mental health.
\nLike the quote says though, sacred action doesn’t require the free-range fantasy. Once I stepped back from my own free-range fantasy, I looked to see what I can do on the tiny, postage stamp sized piece of earth my home sits on. A family member told me about a book called “Square Foot Gardening” by Mel Bartholomew. It shows you how to have a garden in 16 square feet of raised bed. My plan for this winter is to build a raised bed in my backyard and see what I can grow.
\nI also have plans to explore an off-grid work day setup to see if I can power my work equipment entirely on solar. Sacred action, within the constraints of the life I’m in today.
