@ChrisJWilson you make a couple of good points. I didn’t follow the debate all that closely (I only learned about it from reading his post), but I think it developed more after he wrote his blog. I also agree that it’s a natural tendency to be more or less amenable to certain ideas by their grouping — it can be a helpful abstraction, but also a deceptive one. I guess it just requires discernment on a case by case basis to determine where to put one’s interrogative efforts.

@joshuapsteele +1 to what everyone else has said. For me, one of the most critical things I’ve learned (and am still learning) is knowing when you’re spinning your wheels on a problem. Time-box how much time you’ll dedicate to figuring something out for yourself, and if you’re stuck ruminating on the same problem once that time has ended, ask for help. Julia Evans’s blog posts on learning are also very helpful tactical guides for asking for help.

That said, for those with more robust theological education, I highly recommend Theology for a Troubled Believer by Diogenes Allen.
