@JohnPhilpin it’s really interesting: the French used the (mispronounced) Algonquian word for the people living in the region, not the local word, because the French encountered Algonquian-speaking peoples first. Later, the Americans encountered the local Siouan-speaking people and mispronounced their name for themselves. So yeah, lots of confusion of languages to go around!

@patrickrhone fell down a rabbit hole looking into this, and the best I can do to summarize my findings is: this isn’t one of those “English is a stupid language” things, its more one of those “English-speaking people are stupid” things. It’s a big tangle of words indigenous people use for themselves and each other and the white people injecting themselves into the whole thing having no idea whats going on.

Finished Extinction by Thomas Bernhard. Bernhard’s protagonists tend to be insufferable (maybe because their inner ramblings are so familiar), but his books always end unexpectedly somehow. This one was no exception. I quite enjoyed it. 📚

@patrickrhone I’ve lived uptown, by the fairgrounds, and in the marigny. Although it’s probably the least convenient place to live if you need to go anywhere else, I like the marigny (and bywater) best because you need to leave the least.

The other problem these days is insurance. I joke (more than a little cynically, which I know is not becoming) that we won’t be able to buy here until after the next catastrophe, when we can pay some desperate out of towner cash to dump what’s left of his second home, then live in the wreckage.

You got me curious: I checked the American Heritage Dictionary, which I find provides great etymology information, and all three words share the greek root phanai, to speak. This makes phatic the most mysterious of the three terms, as it denotes a particular kind of speech (social rather than informative) without any modification like apo, which denotes other than, or cata, which is an affirmative intensifier. Perhaps phatic is intended to refer to “pure” speech without informational content? Words are wild.
