This makes phatic the most mysterious of the three terms, as it denotes a particular kind of speech (social rather than informative) without any modification like apo, which denotes other than, or cata, which is an affirmative intensifier. Perhaps phatic is intended to refer to “pure” speech without informational content? Words are wild.
