You got me curious: I checked the American Heritage Dictionary, which I find provides great etymology information, and all three words share the greek root phanai, to speak. This makes phatic the most mysterious of the three terms, as it denotes a particular kind of speech (social rather than informative) without any modification like apo, which denotes other than, or cata, which is an affirmative intensifier. Perhaps phatic is intended to refer to ā€œpureā€ speech without informational content? Words are wild.

@thisness I have to admit: Iā€™ve gotten through many a mandatory course at various levels of my education by relying on my ability to fluently simulate meaning. My good grades back then are proof that many teachers, just like LLMs and the people who swear by them today, default to looking for patterns. @JohnBrady Consensus seems to be 20-30 years before the efficiency drops too low, but maybe that will improve. Iā€™ve also just now fallen down this rabbit hole on PV sustainability if youā€™re interested; it includes energy payback time, which is a fascinating way to look at the whole situation. Thereā€™s plenty of research into panel recycling methods, but we already fail to recycle lots of recyclable things, so Iā€™m skeptical. I often think we need new economics more than new technologiesā€¦

@JohnBrady @jabel FWIW Iā€™ve looked into the leaching issue and it seems like people get confused between leaching from installed panels (virtually nonexistent) and leaching from damaged/discarded panels (indeed problematic). Of course, this just affects where the pollution occurs (the dump not your garden), and Iā€™d still rather farms grow food than electricity. Reducing electricity demand seems like itā€™s always the best course of action!
