The 68000 is almost a 32-bit system already, the 8086 also has an extended address bus and segments (only slightly less annoying than 8 bit CPU with memory banks), and there isn't much more available (tms99? pdp11?)
Maybe 16 bit just isn't enough of an improvement over 8-bit, and once you go there you may as well go 32-bit?

This is my V3s based laptop. I used a Lichee Pi Zero and soldered it to a baseboard with the i/o I wanted: usb-to-serial, ethernet, vga, audio out, usb, 4 buttons wired to an analog input. And an expansion port with i2c, spi, uarts and gpios I may use later.
Software side is boring for now, uboot and Linux. I have other plans but no time.
There is a community of hackers on the whycan.com forum if you read chinese (I don't but I use machine translation)

More recently I am playing with the Allwinner V3s which has an LCD controller that can drive VGA easily (again just a few resistors to make a cheap DAC). And Allwinner has some newer chips that are even more powerful (The T113-S4 has 256MB of RAM and 2 CPU cores, while the V3s is \"only\" 1 core and 64MB). These make quite good single chip computers, much simpler and cheaper than these almost-fantasy 8 bit designs, I think?

A few years ago I was involved in the bitbox console https://bitboxconsole.blogspot.com/p/blog-page.html?m=1 which is an stm32f4 generating VGA with dma, timers and a few resistors. RAM is only 192K but the CPU speed allows for decent resolution (up to 800x600, but you could go higher in monochrome by using SPI instead of GPIOs)

My setup back then ended up being IceWM oased. To this day I am still using the same environment and configuration files. IceWM itself gained a few new features, I don't know how its requirements changed.
I don't know how small you could get a modern-ish Linux kernel by removing stuff you don't need. Likewise for other parts of the stack.

Haiku is getting a new beta release sometime soon. We need your help with translations of the user interface and user guide. Usually, our releases only include languages that have at least 60% of the UI translated.

In particular, we are looking for help with Belarusian, Croatian, Bulgarian, and Korean. I think these all used to have complete translations, but are not being maintained.

Correction: you should not set the host header this way, it confuses everything by adding the host a second time to the host header:
Host: pulkomandy.tk, pulkomandy.tk
Breaks at least wget, netsurf and webpositive, but works in vivaldi!
Today I fixed the project listing page and also installed a responsive theme so it's usable on phones and other small displays.
