@joshuapsteele The biggest thing was patience. I had to weed through a lot of vehicles over several months before I found the one I ultimately bought. I also used Lemon Squad to hire a mechanic to do an inspection on any out of state vehicle I could not go see myself, which saved time and anxiety.

@joshuapsteele I used CarGurus mostly. They have a huge selection over a large geographic area, and enabled me to filter for my budget, mileage, and number of owners. I wanted a truck from a southern state (no salt corrosion), so that took some searching.

@plamb The straightforward solution to not enough workers and lower wages would seemingly be to, you know, raise teacher pay. But the new hotness is to turn school districts into housing developers. Score one for neo-feudalism, I guess. Can’t afford your own home? No worries, you won’t miss it. Live on land controlled by your employer, instead! Just forget that this essentially allows your employer to pay you even less (heck, your rent will probably be a payroll deduction!) and the district will get to pocket the equity and appreciating property values.

@ReaderJohn @joshuapsteele I admit, I found his ideas exciting when I encountered them for the first time (grad school). The thrill is the feeling I imagine most devotees to a grand theory of everything tend to get. And mimetic desire does map neatly on to, say, advertising and kids and their toys.

@plamb @JohnBrady @ReaderJohn Of the three cities we visited (Tokyo, Kyoto, Sapporo), my wife and I adore Kyoto, and could definitely live there. The trouble is tourism: Golden Pavilion feels like riding a conveyer belt of sightseers. But the city proper is on a much more humane scale than Tokyo.

@JohnBrady @ReaderJohn I’ve been fortunate enough to spend 3 weeks in Japan, half in Tokyo. It is big, and crowded, and oppressive at times, but it contains multitudes, and I’ve barely scratched the surface of it. One can still find a quiet spot, often when you aren’t expecting it.
