@amerpie I imagine New Hampshire, which is not particularly churchy, falls on the side of the lower spending states. This is certainly the case for higher education. The rest depends on local government, and I’ve experienced cheap ones.

@manton I don’t see the point of doing anything in relation to Musk and the platform he’s ruined. To hell with that. But I do think we have a right to demand of our public officials that they get on open platforms, even if they won’t wean themselves from the bad place. I’ve tried with my representatives in the past, but will have to make another go of it in future.

I read Marina Lewycka’s A Short History of Tractors in Ukrainian this week (Penguin, 2006). It was fun, with a lot of heart. I also nearly laughed out loud several times.

@apoorplayer Unless I’m missing something, it’s impossible to use their discover feature without adding feeds to a reader. In that way, one must switch between browser and reader just to see what’s on offer. Your own limited usage scenario makes sense, but they seem to have grander ambitions.

Under occupation, reality becomes dominated by fear. And fear erodes trust. Some people collaborate with Russian authorities and report neighbors they suspect of supporting Ukraine or having ties to Ukrainian forces. Since danger can come from anywhere, people isolate and start to suspect everyone around them. It feels like nowhere, and no one is safe.

I enjoyed a recent documentary on YouTube called “Chicago In WW2: The City That Fueled America’s War Machine” (55 min.), although one odd detail led me to comment.

Well done and enjoyable, but I do have one bone to pick. A casualty figures chart near the end lists “Russia” as having suffered 26 million. Though the USSR and then Russia have made this into a Russian event, most of the dying was done in Belarus and Ukraine (see Timothy Snyder’s book Bloodlands). The “Russia” label should read “USSR”. This error reflects common usage at the time, but it matters because modern-day fascism in Russia uses...
