I finished reading Omar El Akkad’s post-apocalyptic novel American War (Vintage Books, 2017) this week. Rather than write about its brilliance, I’ll quote from the narrator’s portentous prologue.

@danielpunkass This technological determinism is a red herring argument. Technological determinism obscures the actions of humans and human-led institutions. It leads some to feel powerless and permits others to avoid societal constraints and accountability. The Pope is centering humans in the debate.

I ran across two short films on Kanopy that Alfred Hitchcock made in 1944: Bon Voyage and Aventure Malgache. They were meant to serve as British propaganda, but their Hitchcockian ambiguity led officials in the Ministry of Information to shelve them. They weren’t released for some fifty years.

It’s been a cold and often wet spring, but now we’ve had a few warm days, and the leaves are out in force. My mother is enjoying her balcony again.
