@JohnBrady almost forgot! True story: I saw a fight almost break out at an academic conference over Homer. One scholar said the other’s interpretation couldn’t reconcile why Homer is pro city in one, and anti city in the other. The reply, “pfft! That’s only because you think it’s the same Homer writing both.” Chair of the panel had to step in. Amazing stuff!

@JohnBrady I recently got Lattimore’s translations of both just to read and compare. He’s probably “the best” and easily underrated. I struggled with Wilson but often because she chooses words deliberately and it’s both refreshing and jarring. I think I learned more about Homer every time I thought “she’s wrong!”, and then looked at the Greek or compared with other translations. That effort forced me to appreciate the text so much more.

Excellent and even handed assessment of Wilson’s translation of the Odyssey. I’ve read her translation three times, the first two back to back. I much prefer the translation by Robert Fitzgerald, but Wilson’s is worthy of any bookshelf.

Eating her donut this morning my 5 year old started sobbing. When my wife and I asked what’s wrong, she said the chocolate glazed with sprinkles was Paco’s favorite. She misses him so much it breaks my heart.

My old colleagues did a Lincoln-Douglas style debate over the resolution whether we should repeal the 2nd Amendment. The Student Paper at ASU did a very good coverage of th event and its signifance for teaching civil discourse.
