@rom Yeah… I use DuckDuckGo and that’s ok. I rarely use Google. But in a pinch, it’s nice to know the web only option is there. But I read some blog post somewhere showing how to make it automatic. I just don’t use Google enough to justify the effort.

@ReaderJohn Good for you! Negative polarization is as bad, perhaps worse, than normal polarization. (I got a paper under review with a friend showing that some Dems/Reps become less supportive of NATO and the WTO if—and this is key—they think the other party’s president is supportive.) So recognizing that negative polarization and walking away from it, even implicitly, is a very good first step.

@ayjay Voyager was better on religion in hindsight. I vaguely recall DS9 getting better (or at least more complicated) on religion in later seasons but it’s been ages. Star Trek, in general, has always had the problem that you touched on here. Somewhat related but also tangential: I want to say I read a critique some years ago tracking the decline of liberalism (or at least liberalism’s decreasing self-confidence or coherence) across the iterations.

My old colleagues did a Lincoln-Douglas style debate over the resolution whether we should repeal the 2nd Amendment. The Student Paper at ASU did a very good coverage of th event and its signifance for teaching civil discourse.
