I’m not Catholic and I don’t inherently have a lot of love for heads of giant organizations. I vehemently disagreed with him on plenty of things (like his take on Ukraine, which I thought was nuts). And yet he seemed to be full of genuine love, compassion, and empathy for his fellow humans, especially the downtrodden. That’s so sadly uncommon from people at his tier of society that it shines through like a beacon when we see it.
