\nYour description of your cat today is fantastic. I’ve dealt with a lot of
\nemotional pain in recent years (due to the deaths of many family members and
\nchildren in my life) and nothing helps more than physical closeness like
\nthis—a ‘hug’ or holding the hand of the 86-year-old woman who lives across
\nfrom me. But also laughter—if someone can make me laugh, it will reset
\neverything. Having a ‘first responder’ who is light-hearted is great. I’m
\ngrateful that simple things can do good work confronting dark, heavy terrors.

\nwebsite. One of my Fill Crawlers is used to check if a site has drastically
\nchanged and to take screenshots. It gives me a report. That’s all there is to it.

@vega Great comments. Even without algorithms, this can be trouble—on subreddits,
\nposts can be flagged ‘offtopic’—so overboard moderation is a problem. (Of course,
\nReddit is where one goes to fully ‘engage’. No /s—it’s fine to do that.
\nProblem is: people may not know where to go to get outside of ‘engage’ mode.)
\nOne thought I’ll add re: getting outside of my own interests—I think if we had
\nbetter tools for keeping tabs on our interests, we could more easily move
\noutside them. (Like: if my ‘reader’/‘news feed’ makes it difficult to track 100
\npeople, then I can’t very well track 1,000 people.)

@vega Hey, Vega! You know, it’s very strange to me that static sites have become so
\narcane. For a brief time, Movable Type made them the dominant style of blog. I’d
\nreally like to see a return to something like that. But simpler, perhaps.
\nI rather envy the freeform HTML sites. I really miss server-side includes as
\nwell—that seemed like a kind of ideal form, since you could do more complex
\nthings with plain HTML. I kind of wish modern HTML would let us do HTML includes
\nwithout needing to resort to JavaScript. It seems strange that HTML didn’t go
\nthat direction.

@bradenslen To me, using a real name to hold yourself accountable is kind of like using
\nreligion to make yourself behave. It gives you a good feeling of being on the
\nright side—but imagine how much more meaningful it could be to act well without that
\nexternal incentive. You really can behave just as well with a psuedonym if you
\nmean to. (I tend to think of this as bonhomminity.)
\nStill, you might be right. I’m not going to defend pseudonyms too deeply—I
\njust think they are fun. They do remind us that this is not really us. It’s just
\na virtual representation and is different somehow. I still think online handles
\nare as relevant as ever in these times.
@bradenslen Yeah, well—love doing these. I have learned an enormous amount from these
\n(and my conversations with you and Joe), despite the fact that almost everyone
\nI’ve spoken to gives off an air of “there’s nothing to it.”

@ladyhope I’m wondering lately if there’s a better way to do ‘readers’. Like you say, once
\nyou are monitoring 100s of sites, it’s disgusting to log in each day and see 100s of
\nunread posts. I’m wondering if there’s something that could give me an overview
\nof all the activity that’s going on out there, so I can then decide what to
\nread. No ‘unread’ counts, no notifications.
\nAnd, rather than having a big feed of recent activity, have a list of
\nall the ‘bloggers’/‘writers’ so I can see who’s active—maybe with a little
\ngraph of how much is going on with them, maybe a list of recent post titles or
\nsomething…
\nMakes me think of the Peach social network, where the ‘inbox’ was names of
\npeople who had updated—you could then go in and view their stuff. It was never
\npresented as a big newsfeed or a big inbox of individual posts.

\nreads RSS—what else is there? (I don’t understand using a reader and am
\nlooking for some enlightenment. Don’t think you’ve written about this yet—is
\nthere something you’re looking for beyond basic notification that a new
\npost/comment has materialized? To me, they seem like e-mail clients—not much to it.)

\nyour blog like a Moleskine. I think this is why I always have used those dreary,
\ncheap composition books. I can make them a mess.

@bradenslen That’s not going to work—for a number of reasons. For one, I forgot that
\nmicro.blog already stores your Webmentions. I think, though, that if you can
\neither provide a dump of your Wordpress Webmentions or put your old ‘ramblinggit’
\nup at another URL, it should be possible to get micro.blog to store all of them.
\nWhat I’m thinking is that I’d take all the URLs for those Webmentions and feed
\nthem all into micro.blog—as if I was sending the Webmentions from those
\ndifferent blogs. Micro.blog should then verify all the Webmentions on the
\noriginal blogs and store fresh copies. This could work better than an
\nimport—because sometimes HTML gets mangled when importing from one blog engine
\nto another.
\nAs long as I can get a complete list of those Webmention URLs, it should only
\ntake a few minutes to feed them all in to micro.blog.
@bradenslen I wonder if you could import into Webmention.io? I just love that all my
\ninteractions are stored there and it can easily be hooked up to a new blog or
\nimported/exported elsewhere.
\nActually—I’m sure you could! I might take a stab at this, if you’re
\ninterested.
