I think this is the answer for me: USB-A seems to be rather unforgiving in terms of angle of insertion (all the straight edges, sharp corners and whatnot). The first time I go to plug in a cable, I’m usually rather off-axis, so even if I have the cable the correct direction when I try to insert it, the angle is a bit off. It doesn’t go in easily and I don’t want to damage it, so I give up and turn it over, assuming I have it upside down. Of course that doesn’t work either, but I try harder for a bit longer then eventually give up. At that point I actually look at the socket to see what’s going on. Of course, this repositions me to be more heads-on toward the socket, so I flip the plug back over again and now it inserts more easily.
\n","url":"https://micro.blog/joshducharme/10127344","date_published":"2020-08-19T12:38:27+00:00","author":{"name":"Josh Ducharme","url":"http://joshducharme.com","avatar":"https://cdn.micro.blog/photos/96/https%3A%2F%2Fmicro.blog%2Fjoshducharme%2Favatar.jpg","_microblog":{"username":"joshducharme"}},"_microblog":{"date_relative":"2020-08-19 12:38","date_timestamp":1597840707,"is_favorite":false,"is_bookmark":false,"is_deletable":false,"is_conversation":true,"is_linkpost":false,"is_mention":true}},{"id":"8703981","content_html":"
@JohnPhilpin While I don’t love it, I can understand it. I can see at least three reasons why they would’ve gone this route:
\n\n
First, many who are over 60 may not be at risk themselves, but may live with or in close proximity to others who are (eg. in a retirement community or assisted living facility). In the absence of a vaccine, the best bet to get a “herd immunity”-like environment is to try to keep the virus out of the population entirely.
\n\n
Second, some over 60 have started to suffer cognitive decline. They may not be able to understand if they’re immunocompromised. Even if they aren’t, they may not be able to understand a nuanced message, or they might in the moment, but then forget at an unfortunate time and expose those at risk.
\n\n
Finally, nuance is very difficult to convey in media (mass or social). Trying to articulate all this to a broad, highly diverse audience...probably won’t happen effectively. Only simple, clear messages tend to break through. Given those under 60 are more likely to understand if they’re at increased risk, I can appreciate the trade off they’ve made.
\n\n
I understand the conundrum facing public health officials. I don’t envy them their job.
\n","url":"https://micro.blog/joshducharme/8703981","date_published":"2020-03-07T15:07:41+00:00","author":{"name":"Josh Ducharme","url":"http://joshducharme.com","avatar":"https://cdn.micro.blog/photos/96/https%3A%2F%2Fmicro.blog%2Fjoshducharme%2Favatar.jpg","_microblog":{"username":"joshducharme"}},"_microblog":{"date_relative":"2020-03-07 15:07","date_timestamp":1583593661,"is_favorite":false,"is_bookmark":false,"is_deletable":false,"is_conversation":true,"is_linkpost":false,"is_mention":true}},{"id":"6923590","content_html":"
@jack Thanks! I’ve been focusing on what I could bring to local chambers of commerce, primarily, especially in small towns (presentations and leave-behind materials). My goal there is to get company founders/CEOs/etc. interested, since their support is critical. I’ve also been looking at what types of events the libraries host, which might be another forum. The challenge is these should be good for raising awareness, but can necessarily only begin to touch on a subject, and it’s often difficult to apply this stuff without help.
