It seems just as likely to me that new parents resent their own overprotective parents, and simply (correctly) recognize that it was a massive overreaction in the first place. Nostalgia media like Stranger Things probably plays a role in that.
I also just think “we have more freedom because we have more surveillance” is not a win we should be celebrating.

In a sense it’s kind of awesome the components shortage is forcing hardware and software developers to optimize their shit far more than they otherwise would.
I guess it only works out in the long term if we eventually get back to having normal hardware and we get to run this ultra-optimized system on top of it though. But I think that’s a big IF, and they might be perfectly happy selling no RAM to everyone forever.

Anyways, I do agree. It’s tough for me to support datasets being locked up though. Like I would pay for a proper indexing & search tool, but I’d want it to be a useful tool atop raw data that could be preserved collectively in a decentralized manner, as opposed to paying for access to some data that only one person has, who could disappear at any time.
I guess it’s also unclear to me how possible it currently is for someone else to obtain this historical data.

I think it’s not Google that’s set this precedent, but orgs like Internet Archive and Anna’s Archive are more likely what springs to mind when people think about a theoretical Usenet archive.

None of them have a sterling privacy reputation in the first place, but *especially* not Apple on the server side of things, with Private Relay, Hide My Email, and Siri itself all having very notable slip-ups recently.
Apple also makes a lot of claims about PCC which are misleading at best, like their claims regarding the ability for independent security experts to audit Apple. While you can verify what binary images are running, they don’t have reproducible builds, the binaries contain no symbols; it would be very hard to verify that the binary images match Apple’s published specs, or whether Apple’s introduced any concerning changes or bugs in new images in a timely manner.
When data is not protected by raw mathematical encryption, it is always fundamentally at risk when being handled by a third party regardless of data protection safeguards they’ve put in place.
(This is not to mention the issue of Apple normalizing this behavior, which will lead Google and Samsung et al. to make their own versions way worse than even PCC)

I know Minnesotans are always quick to note that our superior state fair gets far more daily attendance than the \"largest\" state fair in Texas, because Texas just runs theirs for twice as long to get around the same figure.
But I think it is also noteworthy that while the Minnesota state fair's Wikipedia page talks about the fair, the #Texas state fair's page is essentially just a list of massive controversies. 😂

Nearly all other “de-Googled” forks including Calyx and /e/ remain extremely Googled, simply because AOSP itself is extremely Googled and these forks don’t attempt to replace any of the networked services. Even microG is largely just a more convoluted way to directly connect to Google servers for a lot of stuff, outside of a limited number of things they can change like location services.
I’m not saying I *don’t* want to recommend GrapheneOS to people, but—as it is in any field—more actual competition would be an extremely welcome thing :/

After spending a lot of time thinking about who could have possibly asked for iPhone Handoff, I think I've decided it could be a useful feature for travelers.
Maybe you want a backup device for redundancy when you're away from home, or you want to walk around some cities with a burner phone while you leave your main phone in a hotel safe, or you travel across borders (or... attend protests?) with a phone that has far less data on it than your primary device.

It's insane how much Google hates Wikipedia these days. It used to be that Wikipedia was always prominently linked in their cards, and one of the top two results.
Just having to navigate through their terrible search results page to find a Wikipedia link alone is more than enough reason to switch to #DuckDuckGo or Brave Search tbh lol
